Westfall and Huntington win as well.

The more things change,
the more they stay the same....................
As Adena and Westfall stand atop the SVC race
After the first week of league play.

Trace proved tonight why they are the defending Champs.
Carl and Strausbaugh had very solid performances as
We all have come to expect.
I thought ZT 's libero"sp?"  Fletchner"sp?" was very solid
As well and pulled up some very impressive saves.

Pretty good crowd on hand as both schools had nice size student sections
In attendance.

What an awesome volleyball match between Unioto and Zane Trace. For 4 sets I saw some high level volleyball being played last night in Kinnikinnick! I would have paid money to see these teams duke it out…oh wait I did! Unioto definitely could have ended the match in three but left the door open and the Pioneers blasted through it. Set 5 had a lot to be desired for the Tanks but the 15-1 score wasn’t indicative of the way they played sets 1, 2, 3, and 4. With over 8 unforced errors in set 5 (I quit counting after 8 ), the U looked like they ran out of gas. They also seemed to lose cohesion with each other on the floor as well. Zane Trace on the other hand showed some mental toughness and Senior leadership, something that will go a long way when they face the tougher SVC opponents and come tournament time. Boo33 was right…it was a make or break game for ZT and this win keeps them in the hunt for the conference title.

Individually, for Zane Trace Kylan Strausbaugh impressed me with her athleticism, energy, and the ability to make plays. In a word she plays “fast”. I have watched her since 9th grade and now her game has progressed and matured where now she plays fast but doesn’t make a lot of errors. Not sure if ZT stats Plus/Minus but she would def be on the plus side in a big way. Hallie White stood out for the Shermans and pretty much took over set 2. Looking unstoppable she crushed several 4 balls on the outside. By getting stronger and quicker in the off season it paid dividends as she was jumping high, staying behind the ball and hitting hard.

Great crowd for both sides….I forgot how loud that gym could be.

Circle your calendars for the Sept 24th rematch…. That 5th set just might be a little closer (wherever it might be played).

Scratching my head as to why Halle White is not playing full rotation? This girl was on fire last night! She didn't even get in the 5th game, still scratching my head on that one!!!

I agree White was striking with authority, maybe the U will rethink game 5 rotations in the future.
The play that ended the run for the Sherman's was in game 4 when Neff landed about 3 rows deep in the bleachers and saved the ball, cant help but think she tweaked her ankle on that play. The very next volley was when she went down with the leg injury. The Sherman's only scored two more points the rest of the night after that happened.

Not trying to make X-cuses the Pioneers earned that win last night no doubt about it, Carl went three rows deep as well to save a ball and the adjustments made by Trace after the second set made the difference in match.

Is Neff #12? That girl is a go getter! I'm sure she was probably sore after that game. I've never seen a player make as many dives for balls as what she does. There was also a lefty with dark hair that was really pounding the ball, not sure of her name? The U has some awesome players, they just need to all be on the court. Not much good sitting on the bench watching from the sidelines. JMO, not that I know much! Just enjoy watching some good VB! It was quite a show at ZT.

Adena runner-up at Lehman Invitational. Best finish ever at that tournament and first time they ever beat the host school Lehman. Huntington takes third at Athens Invite...

Beret is my second favorite Prince song of all time, of course the greatest Prince song ever is Purple Rain, however I digress.............

Yes, Ol' One /Two is Neff and the Powerful Lefty you speak of is Taylor Overly, the Sherman's also have another lefty in Wardy who is a defensive specialist, with a wicked serve.

"X" aren't we Witty!!!! Personally, I like Raspberry Wine, French Towns Finest! Since this is sports talk, I thought I'd just leave the "Wine" out of my current user name! Plus, my eyesight is getting so bad, fewer letters to punch in is better!!! I hear the "U" is loaded this year! Just a tad bit rusty on the players names and numbers. Thanks to the "U" cheering section, I figured out who Halle White was! I heard them chanting her name in the 5th game, I guess the "U"'s coach couldn't understand what they were saying! I could understand them just fine across the gym floor! ZT has some very comfortable seats! It will be interesting to see if the "U" makes some changes in their lineup! When and where is their next game? I'm sure if I don't make it, I can keep up with them via you on here.

Obviously Unioto was up 2 games to none, but keep in mind game 1 was a 28/26 final. Game 3 ZT was in control , but it did end up 25/23. Game 4 was a blowout and Game 5 was ugly. 15/1. I guess where Im going with this is Unioto did play well . We still have yet to see ZT hit on all cylinders. Unioto is a talented team, but you could watch them crack in the middle of game 3. Yeah Westfall stole one, but great job Lady Pioneers . Experience was the difference. As was the ZT coaching staff.

X, I am going to have to respectfully disagree… Purple Rain isn’t even close to being Prince’s best song. Lady Cab Driver, DMSR, Let’s Work is waaay better than Purple Rain. The sign formerly known as Prince sold out with Purple Rain. But I digress....... so let’s look at what’s ahead this week in the SVC.

Westfall – the only remaining unbeaten team in the league overall (2-0 league, 4-0 overall) will be playing in the marquee match up this week at home vs. Unioto. If you want to be in the hunt for the title you have to hold home court. And if they do…. look out SVC, cause there’s a new sheriff in town. Who said they were a year away…

Adena – they will have a relatively easy week @ Piketon and vs Southeastern. At the end of the week they will be 4-0 in the league and if the Mustangs stumble they will be in sole possession of 1st place! That being said, the next week (@ Unioto, Zane Trace) will be HUGH in their quest for a league title.

Zane Trace – Away at Southeastern and home against Huntington, they will be heavily favored in both matches. Look for 2 wins and staying in the hunt to repeat.

Unioto – Big week for the U both in conference and out of conference. Huntington at home??? and then at Westfall in that crazy acoustical gym. Winning at Westfall gets them back in the conference championship chase. Then on Sat they will be hosting their Invitational with some great competition in the likes of Beaver Eastern (I think will be there) 4-0 and Wash CH 5-0.

Huntington – By far they will be playing the toughest schedule of the week with away games at Unioto and Zane Trace. Hopefully facing tough competition at the Athens Invite prepares them for the week.

Southeastern – Another tough schedule for the week (ZT and Adena) but at least one of them is home (Zane Trace) . Let’s see if SE can show some growth by pushing these teams to 4 or even 5 sets…

Paint Valley – Home against a team on the rise in Westfall maybe they can catch the young Mustang team looking ahead to Unioto on Thursday…maybe. Thursday’s matchup against Piketon will be seeing which team won’t be in the basement at the end of week two.

Piketon – Home vs Adena and PaintValley. See Paint Valley above

Looks like all the favorites won in pretty convincing fashion last night with Unioto the only team dropping a set. The Pv/Westfall match scores looked relatively close but Westfall took care of business. Down 18-17 in set one Westfall out scored the bearcats 8-2 down the stretch. Set 3 appeared to be a lot closer with the Mustangs up 24-13 before PV scored 8 points in a row. Me thinks their minds were on the bus thinking about the U match up tomorrow. PV played a scrappy match. They passed and dug well but they just couldn't finish plays. I thought the libero Riley passed well and the versatile Taylor Baker showed some flashes. Westfall's attack is oriented around Amanda Curry, Hannah Phillips, and Hannah Wallace. If Westfall expects to beat the Tanks they better up step up their intensity and focus on Thursday. Also, they need to run more 1st tempo balls in the middle to Phillips in order to hold the block and make their outsides more effective. I think the "Feature Match" between Westfall and Unioto will come down to which team plays better defense. Good luck to both schools!

DMSR, Let's Work? Are you the one picking
Out this crazy warm up music we must sit through
20 minutes prior to each game?

Sherman's looked very commanding starting the night out against Huntington ,
the same way they looked in the second set against Trace.

The second set the Sherman's
looked the way they did in set 5 verses Trace.
Half way through set three the
Shermans regained focus and finished
the lady Huntsmen off in  four sets.

The Tanks middle played very constant
with Karr and Nelson both coming away with 4 blocks each.
And several Kills.

Unioto will need to keep the energy level on the positive side
and avoid huge momentum swings
to knock off league leading Westfall.
The Class of 2015 from the U
has never won a match In Williamsport,
it has been their achilles heel if you will.

Ten2TwentyEight,

Fabulous post! You had me laughing out loud  That post was so good I'm forced to break it down..

No....but if I did not only would my playlist have the players amped and ready to play, the grandmas in the stands would be casting their walkers aside and twerking on their husbands!!
The Tanks middle played very constant
with Karr and Nelson both coming away with 4 blocks each.
And several Kills.
That's good news for the Shermans. If they get consistent play out of the middle it will make it harder for other teams to defend them.

Wow, what an interesting bit of trivia. In a way I'm not surprised. That gym is very hard to play in if your not used to it. Years ago Coach (Merriman) Koker had some of us come in and scrimmage her team. The acoustics drove me batty. When you can hear someone's conversation across the gym it made it very hard to concentrate. The next time we went back to play I wore earplugs to counteract the "noise".

The week ahead in the SVC.... Week 3 of league play might shake out the standings making the picture of who's fighting for the league crown a little clearer with 2 big matches this week. Let's take a look ahead.

Westfall - Relatively easy week for the unbeaten Mustangs with a home match against Piketon and an away match vs Huntington. Huntington being the best of the sub .500 teams in the conference, look for them to push Westfall and maybe take a set from them at home. Maybe...

Adena - Playing in both "Feature Matches" of the week the Warriors look to control their own destiny. With the U away on Tuesday and ZT coming to Frankfort on Thursday, Adena needs at least a split to keep themselves in the thick of the conference race. If they sweep the week then get ready for what could be the match of the unbeatens the following week in Williamsport.

Zane Trace - After they will manhandle PV on their home floor on Tuesday they hit the road to take on the Warriors. If they take care of "bidness" they will inch closer to Westfall in the standings and be in the hunt for their repeat. The match vs Adena looks to be a great match to watch...and a even better match to play in!

Unioto - Adena at home. PV away. Only one match that matters for the tanks and that's the one on Tuesday. Going into the match with major momentum after winning their Invitational on Saturday against some QUALITY competition, this is a must win for the U if they want to win the league (of course they will have to rely on some other teams too). One of the two "Feature Matches" of the week this one will be so close its too hard to call. But keep this in mind.... the Tanks are unbeaten on their new floor.

Huntington - The best of the mid level teams they need to keep improving and pushing the upper tier SVC teams. In a way they have a big match against SE to separate themselves from the 1-3 teams.

Southeastern - With 2 winnable home matches this week (Huntington, Piketon ) SE needs to play together, play good defense, and minimize errors if they want to come away with victories.

Piketon - On the road for two matches. One which they have a chance to win (SE) the other (ZT) not so much.

Paint Valley - For those that thought they would be pulling upsets on the big dogs looks like your going to have to rethink that. With a couple of wins at the Ironton Invite it might give them some confidence that they need in league play. With ZT and Unioto this week they will need to play their best vball to keep up with these big dogs!

They might have had some nice wins but not high QUALITY wins.

Huntington, Chillicothe, Gallia Academy and Eastern are all nice teams but
None of them are playing at the level they were last season. And the team that beat
Unioto is not as good as they were last year.

Right now Unioto is in a battle for the 3rd and 4th spot in the SVC.
That's a long way from 1st where most had them picked. I think they will end
Up tied with Huntington in the 4th spot at seasons end.

RonVonHagen,

You really believe that SE has 2 winnable games this week? Huntington may be a little down, for now, as they are young, but to say that Huntington is a winnable game for SE, really?????? Also, saying that Westfall has an easy week, having to travel to Huntington, shows a complete lack of SVC volleyball IQ! Huntington has played Westfall very tough and usually gets at least one from them, if not both, every year! My pick, the young Lady Huntsmen grow up this week and go 2-0!

i'll stir the pot a little and say SE takes one set from Huntington but Westfall sweeps them in 3. So HHS goes 1-1 on the week. The "U" has a strange defense and i say Adena exploits that and puts one on them in Frenchtown. We will see come Thursday night around 9 pm. Anyway its fun to pick some games and Von Hagen has been pretty much spot on so far. Jus Sayin...

WOULD YOU BE OK WITH 6th, 7th & 8th GRADE MAKING UP TWO JUNIOR HIGH TEAMS?

If you coach, watch, play, or simply love sports, you want to listen to this week’s show. As a phone call last week expressed a major concern in the league, this week we get a phone call with a possible solution. We will talk about it in great detail and encourage you to give your thoughts. (You can call 740-569-3254 - leave your message with or without name on this topic).
