Any predictions, thoughts or comments. After watching both matches tonight my comments are both setters are good so call that even, i give the libero from Athens the edge as she just kept getting better as the match went on. Middles goes to Athens also as the U does not bring much of a middle attack. Outsides goes to the U with 3 solid hitters that are court savvy too! Coaching edge to Athens as they made better adjustments tonight. Both teams are quick and Athens passes low and tight witch feeds to their middles but the U can move the ball around to 3 outsides 2 of witch can terminate from either side. Both served aggressive so lets call that even, hmmm i think we got us a dandy of a ballgame come Saturday. The U brought a better crowd but they are closer and its a school/work night.

I'm predicting one of those 5 set thrillers like the Unioto, Adena, and Westfall matches of this season.

Athens is clearly on par with the Big Three of the SVC.

The U will need to get crisper on the passes. The Lady Tanks was working their setter way to hard vs Fairfield Union.

Also Fairfield Union was the best 89.9% serving team I have ever seen serve. High risk/reward was their game and it worked vs the Sherman's .

Unioto was the SVC Champion so WKKJ (94.3 FM) will follow them as long as they are playing. WKKJ has always followed the league champion when there are conflicts with other league teams. Guess I could have just said, "There game will be broadcast locally on 94.3 WKKJ and around the world on iheartradio (for those SVC fans located everywhere but local)!"

As long as OUR U comes ready to play and plays loose, they will continue this magical season that started last year. Don't think, just play!

Like Bud said Wkkj is covering the game, it will be on iheart radio as well.
Hope Mike Smith , the voice of the SVC, is feeling better and able to make the call Saturday.

Mike and Tom do a great job calling volleyball matches, one of the hardest sports to call on the radio.

Unioto takes sets 2&3
Athens takes sets 1, 4, & 5

Sets 1,2,3 was very close,
half way through set 4 Athens pulled away from my beloved lady Sherman's

Really don't know what else to say, it was a heart breaker for the Tanks.

Best of luck to the Bull Dogs
Represent the Southeast District well, bring home the State Title!

Good luck to the Athens girls and Coach Natalie. She is the next generation of good coaches in SE Ohio. I hope Athens administration recognizes what they have. Go get em Nat! Tough loss for the " U " and it has been a long, fun ride for this group of seniors. They will look back on this journey with great pride in their heart. If the X could, would you post their overall record from middle school on up if you have the history. By season would be great, its got to be around 100 wins and prolly only 25 losses or so. When you look at the body of work i think it will go down as maybe the best class in Unioto's history of volleyball. I remember watching Karee in the 8th grade and thinking this kid is gonna be good and she delivered! I wish them well and have enjoyed watching them play since they had braces on their teeth.

Boo:
Even though the X is one of those parents
who lives vicariously through their children,
Even I don't have the records you request.
I did make a similar post on the
"Two For the Price of one @ Frenchtowns Meatlocker"
But it was geared more towards the classic match-ups
The Unioto, Adena and Westfall girls from the class of 2015 had.

Here are some varsity stats:
---"svcsportszone.com"---
2014- 24-2
2013- 23-5
2012- 14-10 "varsity, most of this years line-up was playing"
2011- 18-6. "Varsity, Neff, Overly X2 started all season, Ward played in tourney"

---Not sure of the source for the following---
30 straight home victories "win streak still alive"
43 home career wins
Only 6 home career losses to:
"WF x2, Eastern Brown,
ZT , Adena, Huntington
The last time the class of 2015 dropped a match in the Meat Locker
Was September 11, 2012 to Westfall.
2 Third place finishes in SVC
1 runner up finish in SVC
3 Unioto invite titles (Has been won 4 times by a Unioto Team)
4 sectional titles
1 district title
1 regional final appearance
1 SVC title

The rest is a guesstimate on my part:

2010- 17-3?
8th grade year.
Coached by Cindy Overly
Finished tied for 2nd in the League with Westfall.
Won the 8th grade Tournament.
3 losses was to Adena X2, Westfall

2009- 9-9?
7th grade year.
Coached by Jamie White
All 12 girls getting equal playing time
And
Playing 1 hit freeballin teams was the reason for the .500 record
It was the only year the classes of 2015
from P.V., S.E., Piketon, Huntington and ZT
Would beat The U's class of 2015.
Some didn't understand why we would try to get 3 hits in
You know, Bump, Set, Spike
While we were getting beat by 1 hit freeballin teams.
We gave up more points doing so then was actually scored on us.
But in the end it made our girls understand the importance of ball control
And while it didn't help in the win column that year it helped the Sherman's
Be a better team in the long run.

2008-? Only dropped a game or 2, probably won around 10
6th grade year
Cindy Overly coached almost all of the U's class of 2015 girls in the Vinton County 6th grade league
Tied for the leagues best record with Jackson, And Vinton County.
Won the Tournament in a 3 set thriller that had the little x serving the final 2 points in a 35-33 win over Jackson.

2007-? Played better than .500 ball. 8-4 maybe?
5th grade year
Won the Vinton County 6th grade tournament
with mainly girls from The U's class of 2015.

***warning self indulging about to start***

I remember Cindy Overly calling "we still had a land line and listed number"
and asking if the little x would be interested in playing volleyball
in the Vinton County league that fall.
The Little x agreed after learning
not nearly as much running was required to play volleyball as soccer.
With very little practice time we made our first trip down State Route 50 to Vinton County Schools.
Coach Cindy had one rule:
---Well make that 2 rules---
Play to Win "a rule I loved"
And
All girls served over hand
The rules was not in that order. :122245
The very first days games did not see little x serve an ace.
The team Didn't get a point off of her serve.
Ok who am I trying to fool she couldn't even get the ball to the net,
Let alone over it.
In probably the last time I ever talked strategy
to a volleyball coach at any level.
I inquired with Coach Cindy about letting her serve underhanded.
That's when the X become familiar with the two rules stated above. ;-)
The ride home was a dejected one,
After about 10 minute of the self pity, drama, and excuses
I told the little x I didn't want to hear anymore about her serving
I told her to do one of two things,
Give it up
Or
Work harder
In a marker of what was to come for the next 7 years
And much to my pleasure
She chose the 2nd option.
After getting home that day she
Stayed out in front of our trampoline,
practicing serving into the netting till dark.
And it didn't stop there
Every day after school that week
she would be out in front of the netting
Doing the same thing.
To shorten this story up a bit,
Not only did she get the ball over the following weekend
She served the maximum 5pts 3 TIMES!
and even served her team out for a set victory.
A proud papa was I,
and little x learned a valuable lesson on getting out what you put in.
The rest is history,
from the little girl who couldn't get the ball to net
To knocking undefeated Adena off in the 8th grade tournament championship,
making varsity as a freshman
Going to the elite 8 as a junior
Winning the SVC as senior
And playing her last match on an ankle that I dread seeing the x-Ray of tomorrow
What a ride it has been.

Sorry I self indulged there........
X

X, thanks for the history and it was fun watching them play. The X factor, if i may, is this class had very little height with all of them in the 5'8" range so they relied on mastering their skills and great athletic talent. They almost were always undersized against opponents which says alot about the passion they played with.
