Talk about a one man wrecking crew!
Jackson senior Tyrus Coyan blasted three home runs, including a grandslam, had eight RBIs, and pitched a six-hitter to pace visiting Jackson to a 14-3 Southeastern Ohio League South Division triumph over the Blue Devils in a makeup game on Memorial Field Thursday evening.
The win clinched the SEOAL South Division title for the Ironmen, now 13-3 overall and 9-2 in South Division play. Jackson will face North Division champion Zanesville (20-1 and 10-0) at Zanesville on Wednesday, May 7, for the 2008 overall league crown.
Jackson will host last place Ironton and Gallipolis travels to Portsmouth Friday to conclude South Division play.
The Ironmen tagged GAHS starter Nick Stevens for 11 runs and eight hits in five innings. Beau Whaley relieved Stevens in the sixth, and allowed three runs on two hits, including a three-run homer by Coyan.
Gallipolis managed just six hits off Coyan, including doubles by Austin Roush, David Rumley and John Paul Finnicum. Roush led off the first inning with a double and tried to stretch it into a triple, but was thrown out at third by JHS defenders.
Gallipolis had three runs on six hits and committed five costly errors. Jackson had 14 runs on 10 hits and committed one error
After a scoreless first inning, Jackson grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
In the third rung, JHS plated three more runs, but GAHS came back with three in its half of the inning. Coyan’s solo homer in the fourth made it 7-3 and his grandslam in the fifth made it 11-3.
In the seventh, Coyan blasted a three-run homer off Whaley to make it 14-3.
On the mound, Coyan fanned six and walked three
Gallipolis dropped to 11-8 on the year and 7-4 inside the SEOAL’s South Division.
