Lights were installed at the Athens High School baseball field in 1993. Total cost at that time was $70,000 (that covered them doing everything including digging, wiring, etc. Although the high school team does not normally have night games, there have been a few times where use of the lights allowed the game to be completed instead of being called early because of darkness. Last spring, the Athens High team actually played a night game at the beginning of the season (first week in April) against a high school team from Michigan which started at 7 p.m. (the team stayed overnight). The game went well but temperature at game was 37 degrees. It was a regular game for both teams. The Michigan team scrimmaged during their trip south and already had a home game which had been scheduled the next day postponed because of snow.

The lights get use in the summer time for the Athens American Legion team, a 19-over team which plays in the summer and occasionally for some youth teams in the county. Athens also has been host to the state American Legion tournament since 1960 except for a five-year period in the early 1970s. Since the lights were installed, at least one game is played in the tournament which finishes up under the lights and the field can be used (as it was last year for one game) to complete a game which had not been completed on another field because of darkness (all Legion games must go nine innings except for a 10-run mercy rule after seven innings).

I may ask for some money from Musco for this, but if you need lights for an athletic field, contact Musco. They are based in Indiaia or somewhere out that way but have sales representatives in Ohio. They came in, put dimensions of the field into their computer, went back to the factory and put the lights on the crossbars based on that information. When they came back to Athens, they had the poles and the crossbars with the lights on them. They put the crossbars on the poles, installed the poles, threw the switches and the lights came on -- perfectly lighting the field. There are boxes on the poles about eight feet off the ground and anything that needs to be done for the lights can be taken care of there except changing light bulbs

We are very proud of the facility and the lights make a good addition.

Bigfoot-
Sounds like your field has more issues than just a lack of lighting. It will never be nice if they continue to park cars on it.

About how much does it cost to run the lights... say for one night? I'd suspect it would be quite a bit.

Gallipolis has started charging within the last few years, what a joke $5.00 to watch a game that chickamauga creek floods and we have no concessions and a port a crapper.

The cost of the Musco lighting at Athens High School has been minimal. The school said the light bill would have to be paid by the legion, but found that it didn't raise their bill by enough to make a difference. We use the lights primarily in the summer, but have had occasions in high school baseball where we finished games under the lights.
