I have never heard of this, I know that Racine Southern uses real baseballs in the gym. And I know that they play different games using a soft-ball.(indoor ball)

Is that because of the basketball teams have the gym?

The basketball team wouldn't be using the gym now, I say it must be because the basketball coach has something agianst it.

:122248 I am sure the basketball coaches are NOT the ones making the decision, or I should say they shouldn't be...it should be administrators who value the tax payers' money and protect their facilities... floor refinishing is very expensive!!!

That is the most ludicrous things I have ever heard. How do pitchers get ready for the season? It seems the schools could be held accountable for not preparing them for the season if an injury occurs. Wow! Do they have P.E. classes? What are they allowed to do in the gym if these are such sacred places? Just another obstacle for spring coaches to overcome!!!

In the programs I have been involved with, the pitchers and catchers could use real balls during their work...and for that matter, soft toss involving the other players could be done using real balls but infield was taken with a 'softer' ball...

hitting work, unless you have a cage in another area of the school, had to be done via the tee...

grounders while taking infield or bp in a net cage would cut right through the floor finish and possibly deeper which mean big bucks $$$

We are limited on the tennis ball use inside as well. It's rather idiotic if you ask me. The pitchers have a small space up in the fieldhouse to pitch but that is it. It has been so hard to get in any good workouts and i feel that it will put us at a disadvantage for a little while in the beginning of the season. Now we have to really get at it and bust our hind ends to get ready for April 1 vs. Jackson. We are starting to show signs of life though

Maybe not basketball, but I would bet the football team will practice on many baseball fields. Does the administration worry about that? yeah right!!

Sad to say, but preference seems to be to the sport that makes the most money.

At Belpre, baseball and softball are not allowed to use baseballs or softballs in the H.S. gym. They must use the old gym, Lawton Building, to take batting practice and fielding practice if they can't go outside to do so. And, if you could see the condition of the floor in the Lawton gym you would know why they can't take batting or fielding practice in the H.S. gym.

Reconditioning a floor is very expensive. It also costs some money to replace broken block. It has nothing to do with a sport being a revenue producer or not. Just trying to protect the taxpayer's investment in their buildings.

at Northwest we used used wiffle balls and tennis balls with fungo's for hitting drills. wiffle, tennis, "t-balls" for our throwing drills. we had a batting cage set up to hit with baseballs, and our pitchers threw with baseballs on the gym floor.

"Just trying to protect the taxpayer's investment in their buildings."

Yes I think it has a lot to do with the revenue that the sport produces. As for the taxpayer investments, protecting them is important, but it should serve all taxpayers not the select few. I guarantee that when the bond levy was floated to pay for the gyms the proponents lobbied claiming gym to be used for all sports

do not see any high schools I know that are banning the baseball and softball teams from the gym, just the use of the 'hard' balls!?!

besides the damage to the floor...it is quite dangerous in there when you have several balls flyin around!!! :122246
