Senior Cody Noble’s eighth inning, 335-foot blast just over the left-centerfield fence gave host Gallipolis a 7-6 diamond victory over the visiting Pt. Pleasant Big Black Knights on Memorial Field Monday evening in a non-league outing.
Noble’s home run gave GAHS its only lead against the 2007 West Virginia Class AA state finalists, who fell to 1-5 on the season.
Gallipolis improved to 2-1 overall. Tuesday, the Blue Devils will travel to Vincent for a non-league game with the Warren Local Warriors. Wednesday, GAHS travels to Portsmouth for another Southeastern Ohio League contest. GAHS is 1-0 in conference. Portsmouth is 0-2. Friday, Gallipolis will host Ironton in a conference game at 5 p.m., on Memorial Field.
Monday’s game featured some outstanding defensive plays, shoddy base running and errors by both clubs.
PPHS scored three unearned runs off starter Shawn Thompson in the first inning, but GAHS came back to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. The West Virginians forged ahead 5-3 after two rungs.
GAHS tied it up at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning off PPHS relief hurler A. Jones, who replaced Grimm after 3 and 1/3 innings.
In the top of the fifth, Pt. Pleasant had back-to-back doubles off Thompson to take a 6-5 advantage.
GAHS loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but failed to score.
GAHS scored the tying run again in the bottom of the seventh to send the contest into extra innings.
Nick Stevens came on in relief of Thompson, and set the Big Black Knights down without a run in the eight frame.
Then in the bottom half of the eighth came Noble’s home run to clinch the victory for the Ohioans.
Stevens was credited with the win. Jones was charged with the defeat.
