ATHENS JV (11) @ TRIMBLE JV (5)...

Post by questionmark »

Athens JV Dogs made the trip to Trimble and walked a way with an 11-5 victory over the host Trimble JV Cats.

ATHENS JV - 221 111 3 11 16 2
TRIMBLE JV -020 200 1 5 10 1

WP-Zimmerman (1-0)
LP - Fulton

The Athens JV Dogs were ready from the get go as this game marked the first time they scored first. In the JV Dogs first two games (wins over Logan and Marietta) Athens yielded points first. Tonight, the JV Dogs struck first and were able to play a game with a lead instead of trying to climb back from a deficit.
Athens sent Freshman Kody Zimmerman to the mound for his first time this season and he did a very good job. Zimmerman threw a complete game going all 7 innings for the JV Dogs while earning the victory. Zimmerman struck out 6, walked 3 and allowed 10 hits. Trimble sent Fulton to the hill as he was charged with the loss. Boysen relieved Fulton for the JV Cats. The duo of JV Cats struck out 2, walked 10 and allowed 16 hits. Athens was charged with 2 errors as Trimble was charged with 1.

Shad McCollum started the scoring for the JV Dogs as he reached based on a strike-out passed ball. McCollum would steal second & third on consecutive pitches as the throw to 3rd went wild allowing McCollum to walk in for the JV Dogs first run. Colton Noftz would score the JV Dogs other run as he reached on a walk, stole 2nd and scored on a Devin Williams base hit single. Trimble would be blanked in the first as Fulton reached for the JV Cats, but was stranded.
In the 2nd, Athens Tyler Yates would reached on a walk, advance to 2nd and 3rd on passed balls and score on a Dean Maffin single. Stephen Kelder would also reach on a walk, move to second on a passed ball, move to 3rd on the Maffin single and finally score on a single by Colton Noftz. Yates & Kelder were the only JV Dogs to score in the 2nd. After a lead-off out, Trimble's Boysen & Bickley would reach base safely with a single & walk respectively. A Guthrie single single would prove enough to plate both Boysen & Bickley. The JV Cats cut the JV Dogs lead down to just (4-2).
In the 3rd, Robbie Gerren lead off for the JV Dogs with a drive to deep right landing him a double. Gerren would move to 3rd on a wildpitch. After a Yates walk and steal of 2nd, Athens had runners on 3rd and 2nd both in scoring position. Stephen Kelder would deliver with a single scoring Gerren and moving Yates to 3rd. Even though Athens would collect another hit by Curtis Goldsberry, the scoring would not increase. In the bottom half, Athens Zimmerman struck out the lead off man and forced a ball in front of home plate which Gerren fielded and threw to first for the out. Trimble's Putman reached on an error and then was thrown out attempting to steal 2nd by Gerren.
In the top of the 4th Athens would collect another run. Noftz would be that run. Noftz reached on a walk, stole 2nd and 3rd and then scored on a Michael Bailey single. That would be it for the JV Dogs in the inning. In the bottom of the 4th, Trimble's Herbert would reach on a single. After a runner interference. Bickley would deliever a big triple, scoring Herbert. Bickley would score on a single by Dyla. That'd be all for the JV Cats leaving the game at (6-4) Athens.
In the top of the 5th, Jason Snoddy would single to start the inning. Snoddy would steal 2nd, and 3rd. McCollum would get a walk. Snoddy who already stole 2nd and 3rd would be thrown out at home trying to score on a ball hit by Goldsberry. McCollum would advance to 2nd on the play and then steal 3rd. Maffin would step in and deliever a shot scoring McCollum while collecting a single. That would be it for the JV Dogs in the 5th. Zimmerman, stilll in the game for the JV Dogs would allow a single to Putnam, but that would be it as he got the next three JV Cats batters out via a pop out to right, pop out to center and a ground out to short.
In the 6th, Korey Sweeney would get a walk to start the inning. Sweeney then would steal 2nd and advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Goldsberry. Gerren would step in and collect an infield single, but on the play Sweeney would be thrown out at home trying to score. Gerren would steal 2nd, then score on a big triple smacked into the left field fence by Joey Germano. That would be it for the JV Dogs in the 6th. In the bottom half, Zimmerman would issue a walk to Smith to start. Zimmerman then would force an infield pop out recorded by McCollum before getting Trimble's Dyla to ground into a 1-4-3 double play. Zimmerman fielded the shot, threw to 2nd baseman McCollum covering who then threw to Germano who scouped up the throw for the 3rd out ending the inning.
In the 7th and final inning, Athens would do their most damage. McCollum would get a walk and then steal 2nd. McCollum would score on a blast sent from the bat of Maffin which would land him a double. Maffin then would score on a shot sent from the bat of Notfz that would land him a double as well. Notfz would steal 3rd standing before scoring a line drive shot from Trey Harris. Harris would steal 2nd and 3rd. Gerren would reach on a base-on-balls and then take 2nd. Athens would leave the runners on not capitalizing on the steals. In the bottom, Fulton would lead off with a single, and then steal 2nd while being moved to 3rd on a single by Boudinot. Putman would send a ball into the outfield scoring Fulton. Zimmerman wanting to finish the game did just that. Zimmerman would get the next three batters out by getting a pop out to right, a strike out and then a pop out to center.
Athens left runners on, and had some base running mistakes but managed to get a nice win in Trimble.

You're doing a great job coach. You are an ambassador for Athens athletes and all athletics. Keep it up.
