ATHENS JV (17) @ PARKERSBURG SOUTH (11)...

After a tough loss to Zanesville, the Athens JV traveled to Parkersburg South and battled their hearts out to escape with a very respectful (17-11) victory...

The Athens JV Dogs sent Devin Williams to the hill for the start. Williams in his first outing struggled walking 4 straight batters. The JV Dogs then optioned to bring in Kody Zimmerman. Zimmerman already threw a complete game against Trimble earlier recording his first win. Zimmerman pitched effiecient, threw strikes and got some great help behind him from his JV Bulldog squad. Zimmerman allowed 8 hits, walked 6 and k'ed 3 as he earned his 2nd WIN on the season. Athens sent Dean Maffin into the game in the 7th and he shut the door on Parkersburg South. Maffin allowed no hits, no walks and K'ed 1. Parkersburg South sent Chris Smith to the hill. Smith was relieved by Austin Blyton and Lyle Parsons. The trio of pitchers allowed 17 hits, 12 walks and K'ed 7. Parsons suffered the loss.

1st Inning-
PB South's Smith forced Goldsberry to ground out to short, then Maffin to fly out to himself before allowing Joey Germano to single before getting Kevin Deal to ground out to short.
In the Bottom half, Williams struggled walking (Enoch,Kimerer,Shultz,Cornell) before being replaced by Zimmerman. Athens Zimmerman got Wiegel to ground out to 2nd, Smith to ground back to him and Linder to ground out to short leaving the bases loaded. (PB South lead 1-0)

2nd Inning-
PB South's Smith struggled from the start. Walking (Zoulek,Coffman). Smith then K'ed Jason Snoddy before allowing Kody Zimmerman to single to center scoring Zoulek and moving Coffman to third. Smith then came back to K Jack Lavelle before allowing back to back singles by Goldsberry and Maffin. Coffman scored on the Goldsberry single as Zimmerman moved to 2nd. Zimmerman moved to 3rd and Goldsberry moved to 2nd on the Maffin single. Smith would get Germano to fly out to short to end the inning.
In the bottom hallf, PB South would rally. After a Deem single, Zimmerman would get mason to ground out to short. A walk to Enoch would put 2 runners on. Kimerer would then deliever a single scoring Deem and Enoch. Shultz then would pop out to catcher Jack Lavelle to record the 2nd out. Zimmerman then would walk Cornell before allowing a double to Wiegel scoring Cornell. Wiegel would advance to 2nd on a past ball and then score on a single by Smith. Zimmerman would get Linder to line out to Deal to end the inning. (PB South lead 6-2)

3rd Inning-
PB South's Smith would get Deal to ground out to short to start the inning. Zoulek then would single. Zoulek would steal 2nd standing. Smith would then K Coffman as zoulek would steal 3rd on the pitch forcing the catcher Kimerer to make a difficult play as he would throw the ball into left allowing Zoulek to score. Jason Snoddy and Zimmerman then would have back to back hits as Snoddy singled and then advanced to 3rd on Zimmerman's double. PB South's Smith feeling a little pressure with runners in scoring position would then force Lavelle to ground out to short.
In the Bottom half, Zimmerman would K Deem to start the inning. Then Mason would single to center. Enoch then would K as Mason would move to 2nd on the strikeout. The inning would end with Kimerer flying out to centerfielder Zoulek. (PB South lead 6-2)

4th Inning-
Smith would start the inning getting Goldsberry to ground out to 3rd baseman Mason who made a great stab on the ball. Maffin then would deliever a single to left center. Maffin would move to second on the Smith pitched that struck out Germano. Kevin Deal then would send a shot to the outfield scoring Maffin. Deal would then steal 2nd getting into scoring position for Zoulek. Smith would force Zoulek to flyout to deep left.
In the bottom half, Zimmerman would force back to back flyouts to short and center. Then back to back walks to (Wiegel, Smith) would put runners on. Wieger stole both 2nd and 3rd as Smith took 2nd. Wiegel would score when Linder would hit a ball to short that would be bombled for an error. Smith then would score on a past ball. Zimmerman then would find his stuff as he K'ed Deem to finsih the inning. (PB South lead 8-3)

5th Inning-
Athens would have a huge 5th that got then back into this ball game. Catcher Robbie Gerren would lead off with a single to right. Gerren then would steal 2nd. Smith then would make nice move as Gerren was caught too far off the back decided to attempt to steal third. Gerren would then force PB South to do some running to get him out before he was questionably tagged out at third. The Athens fans never saw the tag. Funny as it was, Gerren would be the spark that Athens needed. Stan 'The Man' Smathers would step in a deliever a huge hit to right center. Smathers would record a triple on the play but this was a scary moment in the game. PB South had to players run into each other attempting to catch the ball as they both eventually had to leave. Zimmerman would step in and send a shot to left center scoring Smathers and recording a double. Smith would then come back to K Mike Bailey. Athens then would put together a nice hit and run as Zimmerman took off for 3rd and Goldsberry delievered a shot through the hole on the left side scoring Zimmerman. Maffin then would step in and single moving Goldsberry to 2nd. That would be it for PB South's Smith. Enter Blyton. 1st baseman Joey Germano then would step in. Germano would answer. Hitting a blast into left center scoring Goldsberry while moving Maffin to 3rd and while recording the double. Blyton then would peg Deal on the back loading the bases for Zoulek. Zoulek would battle for a walk forcing Maffin in with the bases being loaded. Gerren then would step in again for the 2nd time in the inning recording a walk, forcing in Germano with the bases being loaded. Blyton then would end the Athens rally forcing RF Tanner Weaver to ground back to him.
In the bottom half, Enoch would reach on an Athens throwing error moving to second on the errant throw. Kimerer then would pop out to Zimmerman the pitcher. Shultz then would send a shot to the outfield recording a double and scoring Enoch. Shultz would steal 3rd and then score on a past ball. Athens pitcher Zimmerman then would relax and force Cornell and Wiegel to pop out to 3rd and left field respectively. (PB South lead 11-10)

6th Inning-
Blyton would shut down Athens in the 6th getting Zimmerman to ground out to the mound, Striking out Trey Harris and striking out Goldsberry.
Zimmerman would get Smith to line out to Deal at short for the 1st out. Then a walk to Hall would put a runner on. Deem would single moving Hill to 2nd. Mason would then walk to load the bases. Zimmerman, who already stranded PB South in the 1st with loaded bases would answer again. Enoch would pop out to Harris at third before Kimerer would ground out to Deal who flipped to 2nd baseman Maffin for the 3rd out. (PB South lead 11-10)

7th Inning-
Athens would show their loyal fans who made the long trip how big their heart was in the last inning as they entered down one run. Dean Maffin would lead off with a walk. That'd be it for Blyton. Enter Parsons. Maffin then would steal 2nd getting himself into scoring position as he was the tying run. Germano then would step in and fly out to 2nd. Kevin Deal would then step in. Deal would reach via his 2nd HBP. Parsons then would walk Zoulek loading the bases. Robbie Gerren then made his way to the plate. Gerren battled, and was walked forcing in the tying run Maffin due to the bases being loaded. Tanner Weaver would then step in and step up for the JV Dogs. Weaver with an 0-2 count would send a Parsons fastball 300 plus into deep left scoring (Deal, Zoulek, Gerren) as he recorded a double. Parsons then would come back and K Zimmerman for the 2nd out. Trey Harris then would walk putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Goldsberry then would walk to load the bases yet again. Maffin then would deliever sending a shot to deep left center scoring (Weaver, Harris, Goldsberry) while recording a double. Maffin would steal 3rd on a past ball. Parsons then would nail Germano in the helmet putting runners on 1st & 3rd. Germano would take off as the ball would skip past the catcher scoring Maffin from 3rd and leaving Germano on 2nd. Parsons would end the Athens rally striking out Deal.
In the Bottom half, Dean Maffin would dominate. Maffin entered for Zimmerman moving from 2nd to the mound. After getting behind Shultz 3-0, Maffin would battle back and strike him out to get the 1st out. Maffin then would get Cornell to fly out to Goldsberry in left before getting Weigel to ground out to 2nd to end the game. (Athens WIN 17-11)

This was a huge win for Athens JV, as it was their 4th game in as many days with 3 still to be played. The JV Dogs will host the Marietta JV Tigers tomorrow at home, a team they beat 13-11 earlier in the season. Then the JV Dogs will travel to Sheridan for a double-header on Saturday to complete the week.
