Post by jottings »

Gallipolis senior Jeff Golden hurled a six-hit 5-1 sectional baseball tournament victory over visiting Athens on Memorial Field Tuesday afternoon.

The victory left GAHS, a number three seed, with a 15-10 season mark. Athens, a number six seed, bowed out with a 10-15 record.

The Blue Devils will battle Chillicothe Thursday as the Cavs upset number two seed Warren Local, 4-3 in a game at Vincent. Warren bows out with an 18-8 mark. CHS, a number seven seed, improved to 10-14. Thursday’s winner will advance to district tournament play.

After a scoreless first inning, AHS took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. GAHS tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.

After a scoreless third inning, Gallipolis took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, the big hit being a triple to deep centerfield by Shawn Thompson, followed by an Athens error on an overthrow at third permitting Thompson to score.

Neither team scored in the fifth. Gallipolis added two runs as a result of walks by the Athens pitchers, Steve Eberts and Jared Cline. The latter replaced Eberts in the sixth with one out.

Gallipolis had five runs on seven hits and made two errors. Athens had one run on six hits and one error in a well-played contest by both teams.

Golden fanned seven, walked three and hit one batter in picking up the win. Athens pitchers fanned seven and walked six. Eberts was charged with the loss.

Score by innings:
Athens…….010 000 0 – 1-6-1
GAHS…….010 202 x – 5-7-2
