Cambridge slips past Beverly-Lowell 6-4 for spot in American Legion district title game

Kevin Sutton

The Daily Jeffersonian

Late game heroics continued for Cambridge Post 84 with yet another late game rally for a dramatic victory in the American Legion District baseball tournament on Wednesday...with yet another different clutch performer stepping up to give Post 84 the exciting 6-4 victory over rival Beverly-Lowell Post 389/750 in action at Don Coss Stadium.

During Monday's 8-7 win over Marietta, it was Drew Yanico coming up with the game winning hit, on this night doing the honors for Post 84was Hayden Loy whose seventh inning base hit plated Caden Burga with what proved to be the deciding run to advance Cambridge to 2-0 in the tournament and move on to Friday's championship game at 6 p.m. versus the winner of Thursday's Beverly-Lowell versus St. Clairsville match-up.

"Our young guys have been carrying us this tournament," Post 84 manager Ron Antill offered following his squad improving to 21-8 on the season. "Hayden is a perfect example of that, with us missing both Austin Fox and Brock Valentine he has been getting more opportunities. And he's making the most of them. That was a big hit for us tonight."

After taking the 5-4 lead, Post 84 wasn't satisfied and was able to tack on a huge insurance run thanks to a huge hustle play by Garrett Burga.

After Loy's clutch single, Post 84 probably caught Beverly-Lowell off guard by sending Loy, not usually a base-stealing threat to second base with one out and Burga perched at third base.

Beverly-Lowell threw through and Loy slide in safely, but Burga took advantage and bolted to the plate, beating the tag by Post 389/750 catcher Ian Ellis to extend Cambridge's lead out to the final count of 6-4.

With the two-run lead, Colin Campbell took the mound for his second inning of work in relief of Post 94 starter Caden Burga.

After working behind the plate for the first five innings of the night, Campbell came on in the bottom of the sixth with Post 84 holding a 4-2 lead. But Beverly-Lowell was able to rally with a pair of runs off Campbell to pull even at 4-4.

But this time with another opportunity, Campbell was up to the task and closed out the victory with a scoreless inning of relief work to earn the win on the mound.

"Colin came on and did a great job tonight," Antill stated. "That's a tough job to catch five innings, and then come out and pitch. Not what we wanted to do , but was the situation we were in with our pitching after Caden hit his pitch limit."

Campbell went two innings for the victory, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out two and walking one. Caden Burga allowed eight hits and two runs over five innings, striking out five

Alex Gruey took the loss for Beverly Lowell (23-6), surrendering three runs on four hits over three and a third innings, striking out four.

Loy and Garrett Burga each finished with a pair of base hits along with two RBIs to lead the 10-hit Cambridge offense. Also collecting a pair of hits for Post 84 was Jake Valentine with a double and single along with making an ESPN Sports Center Top 10 diving catch in right field in the fourth inning that saved a pair of Beverly-Lowell runs.

"That catch by Jake was one you won't see much better," Antill added. "That was a big play to keep them from scoring. Then he comes up and adds a pair of hits to go with it. Just a great catch out there by Jake."

Kaden Whaley contributed a pair of singles, while Yanico stayed hot with an RBI base hit for the winners.

Beverly-Lowell also finished with 10 hits with Kurt Taylor leading the way with a double, two singles and an RBI. Meadowbrook High's Easton Eibel and Wade Pauley each chipped in with two singles.
