Previous 10-0 Nelsonville-York Seasons

Post by NYBuckeye96 »

2017 is the sixth time Nelsonville-York has finished the regular season at 10-0. Here is a look at all previous undefeated regular season teams:

1981 - Division IV State Champions - 13-0 Final Record
Crooksville 8-0
@ Wellston 32-15
Logan 40-0
Miller 41-0
@ Alexander* 50-6
@ Warren* 34-13
Belpre* 28-0
@ Federal Hocking* 38-0
Vinton County* 52-0
@ Trimble* 40-12
# Coal Grove 14-12 Division IV Regional Championship @ Ironton
# Wheelersburg 14-0 Division IV State Semifinals @ Ironton
# Otsego 34-16 Division IV State Championship @ Groveport

First time is a charm. NY won the state championship their very first time going undefeated in the regular season and their very first time ever qualifying for the playoffs. This is back when Ohio had 5 total divisions and only the top 2 teams in each region qualified for the playoffs.

1982 - Division IV Regional Champions - 11-1 Final Record
@ Crooksville 14-6
@ Miller 45-0
@ Logan 35-13
Wellston* 41-0
Alexander* 58-0
Warren* 14-6
@ Belpre* 18-13
Federal Hocking* 63-0
@ Vinton County* 51-0
Trimble* 28-12
# Crooksville 20-13 Division IV Regional Championship @ Lancaster
# West Jefferson 14-22 Division IV State Semifinals @ Lancaster

NY won 24 straight games from 1981 to 1982 before falling to West Jefferson in the State Semifinals by 8 points. West Jefferson went on the following week to win the State Championship 6-0 over Archbold to finish the year at 13-0. Five Divisions, top 2 in each region qualified for the playoffs. NY defeated Crooksville twice, which shows how strong the Ceramics were that year to finish second in the region and qualify for the playoffs despite a week one loss to NY.

1992 - Division III Regional Semifinalist - 10-1 Final Record
@ Athens 35-0
Logan 33-7
@ Meigs* 29-0
Alexander* 34-0
@ Miller* 34-0
@ Vinton County* 41-7
Federal Hocking* 41-0
@ Belpre* 34-0
Wellston* 27-0
Trimble* 34-14
# Ironton 0-14 Division III Regional Semifinals @ Portsmouth

The Killer B Defense. 7 shutouts, 2 games they gave up 7 points, 2 games they gave up 14 points. Five Divisions, top 4 in each region qualified for the playoffs. This was the final year of the unified TVC before switching to divisions. Ironton went on to the Division III State Championship Game where they lost 31-7 to Mentor Lake Catholic. Despite the loss to Ironton in the Regional Semifinals, NY held Ironton to fewer points than every other team Ironton played in the regular season and in the playoffs except for Mentor Lake Catholic.

1994 - Division IV Regional Runner-Up - 11-1 Final Record
@ Athens 28-0
Logan 20-19
@ Portsmouth West 16-6
Alexander 48-14
Trimble 58-0
@ Vinton County* 26-21
@ Meigs* 43-6
Wellston* 41-3
@ Belpre* 47-6
@ Jackson 48-7
# Coshocton 41-6 Division IV Regional Semifinals @ Zanesville
# Wheelersburg 7-28 Division IV Regional Finals @ Portsmouth

Despite only having 4 home games, the Buckeyes went undefeated in the regular season. NY defeated Logan in Week 2, who went on to win the SEOAL. NY defeated Jackson in Week 10 in what was called the Super Bowl of Southeastern Ohio. Jackson finished 8-2, with the other loss coming to Logan. This was the first year the state went to six divisions, with 4 teams in each region qualifying for the playoffs. A win over ECOL Champion Coshocton led to the matchup with Wheelersburg in the Regional Championship. Wheelersburg lost the following week to Germantown Valley View in the State Semifinals, who would go on to win the State Championship over Orrville the following week.

1997 - Division IV Regional Runner-Up - 11-1 Final Record
Athens 48-7
@ Logan 27-17
@ Coal Grove 20-13
@ Miller 13-0
@ Trimble 54-0
Vinton County* 20-12
Meigs* 30-0
@ Wellston* 39-20
Belpre* 13-3
@ Alexander* 41-0
# Wheelersburg 41-14 Division IV Regional Semifinals @ Lancaster
# Bellaire 6-39 Division IV Regional Finals @ Zanesville

Another year with only 4 home games, the Buckeyes still managed to go undefeated in the regular season. Six divisions, 4 teams in each division qualifying for the playoffs. After avenging the loss to Wheelersburg 3 years earlier, the Buckeyes went on to face Bellaire in the Regional Finals. Bellaire was coming off two consecutive losses in the State Championship Game in 1995 and 1996. The following week, Bellaire lost to Germantown Valley View in the State Semifinals. This was the last year NY has played at the Division IV level to date.

2017 - To Be Determined

A big win over Logan usually meant a special season at NY.

Notice that the PE teacher was responsible for two of our best seasons ever. Those were the true glory days of Buckeye Football. Since his time, we havent done much. Holding out hope for this year.

That season was the third straight 10 win regular season for Bellaire. Their QB quarterbacked the South to a win over the North in the Ohio North/ South game and was at Ohio State foe one season.

Notice none of those years were when they were in the SEOAL. Like Athens, they had to run to have any success.

Notice none of those years were until Coach Dave Boston built a legacy and culture of winning. Leagues don't matter, culture does.

At the time Nelsonville left they were real small for the SEOAL. Going to the TVC was much better for them playing in a newer league with school more their size. Athens left mainly because their football program was a shame for the SEOAL. Bigger than around half the schools and couldn't compete with any of them. When they saw the future for the SEOAL was to go to 10 teams they set back and ran everything around the table and some one came up with the way out. Travel time....So they voted to go to 10 schools and then threw their plan out on the table to begin the falling of the SEOAL.

Keep reliving the glory days Logan, that's why you are terrible now. Congrats you used to be "good" and double the size of anyone in the area. Then you had a good run around the Conrad twins who were groomed in the NY Youth League. Now that Coach Amyx is gone, what do you have left? NY is not the Nelsonville Greyhounds anymore. We are a D6 school and you are what D2 or D3? Nelsonville was never afraid of you and obviously the coaching hires you made since Coach Amyx has been questionable (maybe it's the assistants fault? the parents?). Stop blaming the kids/talent. Nelsonville lost a ton from last year and is now 10-0. Coach Richards has come in and helped carry on the tradition and has the kids believe in themselves. The assistant coaches are a part of the kids everyday life and are respected. Don't come on here and troll NY for the 1950s. You need to worry about how to resurrect the Logan Chieftain Program rather than troll NY. Yes NY left the SEOAL a long time ago, sounds like sour grapes to me, most of us were not even alive. The TVC has been good to us, but maybe because of your cockiness no one wants to let you join their league. With all that said I hope Logan finds a home and can again put a respectable product on the field, but don't hate on NY because they have a tradition year in year out that Logan wishes they could maintain.
