Ironton's Program - History

Post by kantucky »

A few seem to want to Hijack the Ironton/Portsmouth thread to discuss Ironton's program. Mostly it's a few Burg fans which puzzles me. I don't know that I've seen Ironton fans attacking Burg's wonderful program. A few might but..it was mostly in self-defense

While I'm here though....

Who has the 13th most wins in all the state of Ohio? that would be IRONTON

Who has the 3rd most playoff appearances of all the schools in Ohio? that would be Ironton

Who has the 11th most playoff wins all time in the state of Ohio? that would be Ironton

What school had the coach with the most wins in the state of Ohio? that would be Ironton and Bob Lutz

What school in the state of Ohio had the longest unbeaten streak? that would be Ironton, 1977 - 1983

That's my fault, it was to have said, regular season wins. As far as the tie, it's 'unbeaten streak' not win streak.

Ironton went 10-0-1 in 1979. They defeated Jackson, 7 - 0 that year. They tied Washington Courthouse, 13 - 13 and won the state championship against Akron St. Vincent 7-6

That would be a toughie. One team that many believe was the best ever was the 1978 undefeated team that didn't make the playoffs. That is WHEN Ironton started finding different opponents. It was WAY harder to make the playoffs back then. To get in with a few loses was unheard of. Not only did you have to have a great season but you had to have it against good teams

7-0 Ironton.
Was that the game Jackson was near the goal line with SEOAL MVP Brian Landrum in the backfield but the QB kept it and was held short?

I'd have to let someone who knows a lot more about it than me tell you that. However, I do find it interesting watching Wheelersburg. At the beginning of the year, many thought they'd not make it to the playoffs. Now, they're 6 and 3

In 1999, Ironton's final season record was 6 and 3, they even lost their final two games only to lose the state championship in the last minute or so of the game. Who'd thought that team was going to the state. I can tell you my opinion, that team was just so physical. They were knocking the snot out of other teams

The 78 team was probably the best ever to come out of Ironton and the strike in Logan that year (1978) cost the Tigers dearly as they could not play their game.........

The '99 team beat Germantown Valley View, who were undefeated and favored to win state, at Cincinnati Princeton Stadium. Their qb was all-state. Valley View was up by 2 scores and right before half I think it was Jason Harmon put a hit on their qb that sent him to the bench for the rest of the game. I want to say Harmon then took the second half opening kickoff to the house and we came back and beat them. I think Harmon returned a punt for a td too. We lost to Sandusky Perkins on a hail mary with about 30 seconds to play in the state finals. That 6-3 team was 30 seconds from being state champs.

Harmon wasn't very big, but in my opinion was probably the best all around player I've seen for the Tigers. He was a good running back, dangerous punt and kick returner and on defense he was a real hitter. Perkins had a tailback that was commited to Ohio State, weighed about 215 and Harmon hit him in the open field and about broke the guys leg. Put him outta the game for a good while. Jason went on to start defensive back for Michigan State.

Have to disagree with part of your story about the Perkins game. A 29-yard pass isn't a hail mary. Everything else sounded right though.
