... Early season games, you go into them THINKING "this should be a good one" but you never know - Waverly finished the last regular season 7-15 but made a nice district final Convo run, Gallia Academy was 8-14 in the tough OVC from a year ago ... I look at the rosters, players I KNOW are talented, size in the paint, returning starters/varsity experience ... then you toss in the intangible - youth - What will the untested youngsters bring to the table ... on paper GAHS vs Waverly matched up very well - they met my "traveling to see the game, I only go watch good games" criteria ... last night didn't disappoint ... the Waverly Tigers of new head coach Teryn Jarrett bring the complete package : size in the paint in Gunnar Myers 6-4 jr, Sawyer Myers 6-5 jr... off the bench 6-5 soph Garrett Rosenberger ... length on the wing in 6-3 jr Teagan Hurt ... injured 6-3 jr Landyn Russell ... guard play 6-0 fr. Kai Keesee and the stirrer of this pot of talent 6-0 soph. Kage Alexander - the smooth lefty PG may just be THE best in Southern/Southeastern Ohio ... Gallia Academy is a deep, talented team that gets little recognition tucked away in the eastern corner of the OVC basketball boundaries BUT the Blue Devils under Coach Gary Harrison have been in the big game battles of the OVC ... Coach Harrison plays 9, has size in 6-5 jr Gabe Hammons, outstanding young talent in sophomores 6-1 PG Ty Reed, 6-3 Tripp Sola, 5-9 Grant Owens ... a talented pair of freshmen 6-0 Brody Beaver and 6-5 lefty big man Colson Miller ... the "old" men that are the motor of the Blue Devil squad jrs Hammons and a "do everything - scoring inside/outside, rebounding, handling the ball on the perimeter, put the ball on the floor & finish at the rim , while dropping dimes in the offense 6-3 Macen Meadows ... if Meadows is the motor, the key driving the GAHS car is shooting guard 5-10 senior Ethan Rose - handles the ball on the perimeter, gets to the rim and has the ability to drop 5 threes a game from deep ... this Gallia Academy TEAM from top to bottom is one of the best all around/top to bottom squads the Blue & White has put on the floor for a number of years ...
... the opening quarter saw the visiting Blue Devils LOOK the part as the GAHS dropped 15 points while not allowing the home standing Tigers a fg until the 3:37 mark of the first period ... GAHS had 4 starters dent the scoring column led by Macen Meadows 6 pts on bucket in the paint/ a deep rainbow trey and 1/2 from the stripe ... 5-9 sr. Ethan Rose added a transition bucket at the rim & one (3pts) to go with 2/2 form the FT line (5pts) ... 6-5 jr Gabe Hammons scored on the blocks taking a dime from Meadows on the perimeter to score down low 2pts ... 6-3 soph Tripp Sola put the ball on the floor & finished at the rim 2pts ... great overall opening quarter on the road for Gallia Academy ... Waverly's only points in the opening 4 minutes & change were from the line PG Kage Alexander 2/3 from the line and 6-3 jr Teagan Hurt 2/2 ... finally the lid was taken off of the bucket when the lefty PG showed what he does maybe better than anyone in the SE district - gets to the rim & finishes ... strong with the ball, uses his 6-0 frame well , Alexander with the first Tiger goal 2pts at the rim with 3:37 on the clock ... the only other points for WHS came frame Unioto transfer, 6-0 fr. Kai Keesee ... the youngster showed range dropping a deep trey to close out the Tiger first qtr scoring 3pts ... Gallia Academy 15 Waverly 9 after 1 ... when you watch basketball a lot you KNOW when players have got "it" - the swagger, that "want the ball in their hands, I can score on anybody" attitude - Kage Alexander has got "it" and he backs it all up with his play on the court ... in the 2nd period, Alexander put the Tigers on his back - the talented soph, dropped 12 points the quarter - a pair of strip, steal, and score transition buckets 4pts, 2 deep corner threes 6pts & 2/2 from the FT line led the Tigers back into the contest ... Alexander had a lot of help from his friends as Teagan Hurt added a putback bucket 2pts/ Sawyer Myers scored off a nice assist from Kai Keesee/ Gunnar Myers took an entry pass from Teagan Hurt to finish on the block for 2pts ... Gallia Academy kept the lead going into intermission as 6 players put points on the board with the damage coming from deep as the Blue Devils dropped 3/6 from beyond the arc - one each from Ethan Rose/Brody Beaver/Macen Meadows ... 6-5 freshman Colson Miller got on the board with a drive & finish 2pts & 5-9 so. Grant Owens came in off the Blue Devil bench & added a midrange jumper 2pts ... Gallia Academy 29 Waverly 27 at the half ... as a fan of high school hoops sometimes you get lucky in that the basketball gods come together and allow both teams to entertain all at the same time , in the same quarter ... the 3rd was THAT ... for Gallia, Ethan Rose took the wheel dropping 10 pts ... the smooth shooting senior drained a pair of treys giving him 3 treys on the game ... Rose went coast to coast for a transition bucket and 1 (his second finish & 1 of the game) 3pts before finishing off his qtr scoring going 1/2 from the line (10pts/18 thru 3)... as a team in the quarter the Blue Devils turned the Tigers over 6 times converting 3 for transition buckets with Hammons/Sola adding one each ... Ty Reed dropped a three pointer to finish off the Gallia scoring and pushing the lead to 5 pts ... the Tigers - having shot themselves in the foot so to speak with their 6 turnovers/3 of those being player control fouls - STILL had a nice offensive quarter led by Teagan Hurt's 6pts - a transition finish 2pts/offensive board & putback 2pts/ drive & finish at the rim 2pts ... Kai Keesee 2pts in the paint/ off the Tiger bench Garrett Rosenberger added 2 pts on a putback bucket ... Kage Alexander did Kage Alexander things draining his 3rd triple 3pts/ and scoring on a drive & finish 2pts ( 21 pts thru 3 qtrs) ...Gallia Academy 47 Waverly 42 after 3... thru 3 quarters of play Gallia Academy had gone 8/16 from the FT line ... in GAHS previous game in a win vs Athens the Blue Devils were 9/9 from the line ... in hindsight, especially in close games, FT shooting makes a difference - if you GET to the line, you have to make the opponent pay ... last night, not sure it was the FT shooting that was at fault as Waverly was not lighting it up from the line either (13/20 from the line for the game) ... in the final period it came down to "the goal in basketball" - you gotta put the ball in the bucket ... Gallia was held to 2 fgs in the 4th period - Macen Meadows in the paint 2pts/Gabe Hammons at the rim 2pts ... Ethan Rose added 3/3 from the line ... 7 pts in the period ... 6 key turnovers down the stretch was the deciding factor ... Waverly with 15 points all by the nucleus of the TEAM ... 8pts from Gunnar/Sawyer Myers - each with a fg, and a combined 4/6 from the FT line in the final minutes of the qtr. ... Teagan Hurt 1/2 from the free throw line (11 pts for the game) ... Kage Alexander adding a big putback bucket 2pts, a score down low & one (3pts), 1/2 from the line - his 27th point of the game - to close this one out ... Waverly 57 Gallia Academy 54 a final ...

Re: Waverly 57 Gallia Academy 54 a final
Sounds like you picked a great game to attend. I bet it was an electric environment Friday night in the Waverly Downtown Gym...especially from the home team side. One thing is always consistent whether the team is good or having a down season (in
or
) and that is Waverly fans show up. Always great support from Waverly community. Congrats to the Tigers! Hope my Pioneers hand Waverly its first loss tonight though. Should be a great game! Even in a losing effort, playing in close battles will do nothing but benefit the Blue Devils for OVC play. SOC vs OVC matchups are always fun to keep tabs on for "conference bragging rights" in southern Ohio...
