MLB Lockout

MLB owners have locked out players as the Bargaining Agreement in place since 2016 has expired. The main issues as always are wages and free agency.

I guess this will give Reds management the opportunity to jettison more veteran players and further cut payroll.

I don't blame the players. I don't know how they make it on them measly wages they get now. As paldi would say "brother can you spare a dime"
You can bet they will be playing again by the time April or May rolls around.

Has pro sports gone downhill ever since Chamberlain signed a $100,000 contract?

Players reject Owners offer of federal mediation. Looks like the start of spring training and the regular season will be delayed.

Some progress made with some but not all issues resolved:

There will be designated hitters in both leagues.

Compensatory draft picks will no longer be given to teams who lose a player to free agency. This will remove one impediment to signing free agents.

The MLB teams amateur draft order will now be determined by lottery rather than win loss record. This will help keep teams from tanking during a season to improve draft order.

Unsolved issues remain: minimum salary, time a player needs to becomes a free agent, and salary arbitration.

The unresolved issues appear to be how long a team can control a player's contract from the time a player first makes a MLB 40 man roster and the accounting games used to count time of service on that roster. Players want economic freedom to become free agents sooner. Owners, such as the cheapskates in Cincinnati, want to keep the players from their minor league system as long as possible. The NL rookie of the year makes $570,000 with the Reds, what could he make as a free agent now?

Billionaires in a pissing match with millionaires. Apparently the players have offered to work under the old agreement until a new one is negotiated. Spring training and the regular season could proceed on schedule.

Despite meeting daily for two weeks, owners and players remain at odds. Owners have issued a deadline of 5pm today for agreement or they will cancel games
