Nelsonville teen killed in accident
A Nelsonville teenager was killed and five other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Athens County Tuesday.
The crash occurred at 4:43 p.m. at the intersection of Route 691 and York Twp. Road 260 (Matheny), according to the State Highway Patrol.
According to the patrol, Ernie Bridgeman III, 16, of Logan, failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection and his car was struck by a pickup driven by Kenda Kirkendall, 51, of New Marshfield.
The crash claimed the life of 17-year-old Tyler Moore of Nelsonville, a passenger in Bridgeman’s vehicle. Tyler was a senior at Nelsonville-York High School.
Kirkendall was taken to Doctors Hospital Nelsonville by Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Services with non-incapacitating injuries and Bridgeman was taken to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital by SEOEMS, also with non-incapacitating injuries, the patrol said.
Sixteen-year-old Aaron Rosser of Nelsonville, another passenger in Bridgeman’s vehicle, suffered incapacitating injuries and was taken to Doctors Hospital by SEOEMS. Aaron is a senior at Nelsonville-York High School.
Two other passengers in Bridgeman’s car were also taken to area hospitals by SEOEMS for non-incapacitating injuries. Cody Moore, 16, of Nelsonville, was taken to O’Bleness by SEOEMS and released by this morning, according to the hospital. Cody is a sophomore at Nelsonville-York High School. Brian Bridgeman, 17, of Nelsonville, was taken to Doctors Hospital, the patrol said. Brian is a sophomore at Nelsonville-York High School.
Counseling is being provided to Nelsonville-York High School students, according to Nelsonville-York High School Principal Mick McClelland. Counselors will be on site at the high school today.
“It’s a tragedy, and we are coping as best we can,†McClelland said this morning.
Kirkendall’s passenger, 3-year-old Killian Tolley, was also taken to Doctors Hospital, but was not injured, the patrol said.
All the parties in the crash were wearing seat belts, and the accident remains under investigation, the patrol said.
