The end of an era at North Adams

Dave Young has either resigned or been forced out at North Adams. I for one hope it was his choice. He has put North Adams basketball on the map and his dedication to the North Adams community goes unmatched. I would like to wish him well and thank him from the bottom of my heart for all he has done.

A TREMENDOUS coach. His record speaks for itself. Has to be one of the best coaches in the SE District of the past 25 years.

I wish him the best of health.

Dave is not only one of the great coaches in Ohio, but also a great friend. Dave set a model for how to build a great program. I will always look up to and admire him and his work.

it just goes to show that you can't beat city hall. a power struggle where no one wins.

Has any decision been made yet as to who is going to take his place?

What is up with schools these days getting rid of all these winning coaches?

Hey everyone ... I interviewed Dave Young this week ... he is no longer the head coach at North Adams and I wrote a feature on his career.

I thought the most interesting part of the article above was that "kids used to be tougher, but you could get through to them but not so much anymore, it starts at home". It sounds to me like the administration used the last one or two years to subtlely force him out at their discretion and maybe that created some of the health issues. Well, I just hope that the baggy pants and tattoos as mentioned don't become the norm down there like it has everywhere else. The "old school" coaches could mentor, coach and teach without much reprisal. Were some of them tough (yes), were some of them over the top (yes), but did it ever occur to people today that a little discipline and hard work never hurt anyone in the long run. My personal opinion is that America as a whole is a lot weaker today (i.e., economy, jobs, exports etc.) because the work ethic, sweat and perserverance of previous generations is being forgotten and teachers / coaches are a big part of this for they are the one's dealing with america's young people throughout their teenage years helping mold them into what they will become as an adult in today's society. If you have passive leaders, not much good will come at the end. Sorry to go on ranting like that but I wish coach Young continued success in whatever he does in the future and I enjoyed watching his teams play over the years.

p.s. - His 1996 team did get ripped off on that last second shot at the state tournament (I was there and it was no doubt, NO GOOD).

Great article Stephen, possibly the best you have put into print that I have read. Very deserving for one of the best high school coaches that I have witnessed.

That was a very good article. Coach Young should have been allowed to retire on his own terms. He has earned that right.

I find it interesting that an article like that came from Highland County while the Adams County paper has never mentioned that he retired. As usual the Peoples Defender is lacking when it comes to major stories in Adams County sports.

i would like to apologize to Mark Carpenter at the Defender. I wil admit since he has joined the Defender the sports coverage has gotten 10 times better. He works very hard and is a very good writer. I guess i was just thinking back over past years before he worked there when coaches would send game information to them and they would never put it in. I am looking forward to the article that Mark is writing on Dave.

This seems to be happening everywhere. A very Classy and dedicated Coach who was not rehired by some Board members who have self motivated interests. It is sad that they would treat Coach Young in this manner. He gave his all, and they gave him no respect in return. I hope the incoming Coach is given a fair chance and wish him all the best.

boomer633, Thanks for the article about the great and long tenure of Coach Young. He touched so many lives in a positive way that he doesn't even know about. He is a Coaching Legend in the State of Ohio.

Coach Young. I wish you all the best results in both your Health issues and whatever you choose to do in the coming years. Anyone who is lucky to have you on their staff, will be getting a proven winner, both on and off the court. God Bless you and yours, Respectfully, a Fan of the Game
