Hurricane 35 a final
... the 2nd game was a matchup of "foreign" teams Parkersburg South vs Hurricane Wva ... the Patriots of Parkersburg South come off of beating Logan High School last week 65-52 at PSHS ... the Hurricane Redskins entered the game at 1-2 on the season with 6-11 Gabe Beny Till in the middle ... asking around , the Redskins were down a starter due to injury Nas'Jaih Jones who had a 15 point outing in the HHS game on Friday ... not sure it would have made a difference as the Patriots who play "94 foot pressure D for 32 minutes" were never behind in this one , taking the 1st quarter 14-12 behind Austin Mooney's 5 points including a triple, another 3 pointer from Riley Street, 2 points each from Caleb Schaffer/Devin Hershberger/ 2 FTs from Cyrus Traugh ... for the Redskins of Hurricane the 6-11 Till had 5 points ( a deuce and 3 FTs) , a 3 from Dillon Tingler (3 pts) 2 a piece from JT James/Brayden Whittington ... Parkersburg South 14 Hurricane 12 after 1 ... that was as close as Hurricane would be the rest of the contest as the PSHS pressure turned the Redskins over 26 times in the game, holding HHS to just 3 fgs in the 2nd and 1 fg in the 4th periods ... Parkersburg South played 13 players with a running clock most of the 4th period ... on the PSHS side 3 treys in the 2nd period 1 each from Austin Reeves off the bench, Mooney with his 2nd of the game, and Jackson Smith's 3 ball were more than enough when paired with the inability of the Redskins to solve the PSHS pressure to call this one over after 2 periods ... Parkersburg South 32 Hurricane 19 at intermission .... the 3rd qtr. was HHS's best scoring qtr. as the Redskins put up 12 points (6 from Till, 5 Jackson Clark, 1 on a Tingler FT) for PSHS the left handed 6-0 senior guard carried the Patriots with 10 points include 6 on transition buckets after Redskin turnovers ... Parkersburg South dropped 28 points in the quarter to make this one a route ... Parkersburg South 60 Hurricane 31 end of 3 ... ... one of the things you notice following 71 teams across SEO is the strength of leagues this season ... the TVC across the board is down while the OVC is strong top to bottom with South Point, Fairland, Gallia Academy, Ironton leading the way ... Fairland entered this one sporting one of the best scoring guards in all of SEO - Aiden Porter ... AP scores the ball from everywhere 3 point land, midrange, and at the rim while seeing the floor to drop dimes in the offensive flow of the game for FHS ... on the Federal Hocking side - the Lancers graduated an outstanding group of senior off of last years team - yet bring back a solid - TVC solid - team led by soph guard Tariq Cottrill ... the matchups showed Porter guarding Cottrill - a matchup based on the TC output of only 12 points, AP won on the night as the rest of the FH team didn't match up well with the rest of the Fairland TEAM ... with 1:19 to play the first period the Dragons owned this one leading 20-9 ... all 5 Dragon starters had put numbers up on the napkin stat sheet , Fairland was 3/5 from beyond the arc ... for FHS Porter 5 pts with a trey/ Steeler Leep 6 points at the rim on 3 nice baseline drives to the rim, Jd Thacker 5 points with a triple to his name, Ethan Taylor 3 pts on a beyond the arc 3-ball, Will Davis 3 pts on a deuce & 1 ... for Fed Hock Cottrill 4 points on couple midrange jumpers, Lane Smith 2 pts and pair of 3 pointers with Andrew Airhart and Iden Miller one each ... Fairland 22 Federal Hocking 14 after 1 ... in all of the year's I have watched Fairland hoops under Coach Speed's tenure I expect ,and am never disappointed, to see outstanding defensive pressure, 3 point shooting, great fundamentals at both ends of the floor, outstanding passing with dimes dropped on backdoor cuts - the whole TEAM package - in the 2nd ALL of the above was on display as the Dragons put this one out of reach - putting up 23 points vs 11 for the Lancers ... FHS turned FH over 6 times with pressure fullcourt D, an offensive explosion from everyone who got touches/ every even scoring across the board for the Dragons - AP led with 6 points (his 2nd trey) , 5 points with triple and 2 from Ethan Taylor, Jd Thacker with 4 points, Will Davis 4 points, and 4 points off the bench - 2 each from Chase Allan & Zion Martin ... the Lancers picked up 4 points each from Cottrill/Airhart, 2 from Caden Chapman, a FT from Gauge McVey ... Fairland 45 Federal Hocking 25 at the half ... coming out of the half, the Lancer fixed the turnover issue but couldn't find an answer to Fairland's "everyone can score the rock" offense ( 4 players scoring in double figures for the game) as Fairland added 25 more points in the 3rd with 8 points off the bench from guard Chase Allen (including 2 triples from the top of the key) ... 6 points in the paint from Jd Thacker, 5 more from Ethan Taylor including his 3rd trey on the game, and relatively quiet 4 points from AP to go with 2 from Leep to round out the scoring for FHS in the 3rd ... for Fed Hock 12 points didn't keep pace with the Dragons onslaught ... three balls from Cottrill & Airhart (5 pts) and pair of 2 pointers from Smith ... this one went to a running clock ... Fairland 70 Federal Hocking 37 after 3 ... Fairland played everyone on the roster in the final period STILL able to put up 11 points in the period and hold the Lancers to 1 point ... Game #4
Newark 60
Waverly 55 OT a final
... the most intense game of the day - outstanding matchup between arguably the best team in SEO no matter the division Waverly Tigers (D2) vs (5-1) OCC Cardinal division D1 power Newark Wildcats ... a look at the Newark PROGRAM in D1 - they ain't bad to say the least - Coach Quackenbush has built a program that averages 18 wins per season in the last 10 years in D1 ... great matchup, outstanding effort from the Tigers of Coach Robertson taking the Wildcats into OT before falling 55-60 ... this one was Waverly's to win as the Tigers built a 7 point advantage at 6:05 in the 4th leading 44-37 ... timely or untimely turnovers (5 in the 4th period) and untimely missed FTs in the overtime period (0 for 3) were the 2 napkin stats that put the L on the Waverly side of the pocket schedule - both of which when playing a D1 power from Above the Lancaster-Dixon Line which averages 18 wins per season you can't have - a great barometer game for Waverly, a true test for Newark from a SEO D2 team ...
... looking back at the napkin stat sheet, Waverly trailed in this one only 3 times - at the end of the half, a couple of seconds at the end of regulation and the overtime period... at 4:53 in the opening quarter Waverly led 7-3 forcing a NHS timeout ... the Tigers opened the game jumping all over the Wildcats going 2/3 from downtown with 3 balls from Trey Robertson/Wade Futhey ... Will Futhey offering up 5 points in the period to lead the Tiger attack and 4 points from Hudson Kelly ... the Tiger D defined the phrase "get up in 'em" on defense holding the Wildcats to 9 first qtr points : 1/4 from behind the arc with the lone triple coming from Grant Somers, single buckets from Ethan Schell and Drew Oberholtzer and a pair of FTs from Steele Meister rounded out the Wildcats on the scoreboard ... Waverly 15 Newark 9 end of one ... Newark , a very guard oriented team, found the range from behind the arc ... the Wildcats went 5/9 from the 3 point line Meister with 2, Schell with 2 & a pair FTs, Somers 5 points on a trey and a deuce ... on the defensive side Trey Robertson was the center of the Newark attention as arguably THE best guard in SEO was face guarded for 32 minutes - I'm more than sure Trey could tell you the flavor of the Austin Rose/Drew Oberholtzer and Ethan Stare's gum of preference was for the game ... in a game where the officials "let them play physical" - it was a difficult night for T Robertson to get loose ... the Newark D held the Tigers to 10 points in the 2nd period ... 4 from Trey Robertson, 4 from Mark Stulley, and 2 more from Will Futhey on a putback bucket ... Newark 28 Waverly 25 at the half ... the 3rd period was as close to "being owned" by a team in this one as you can get as the Tigers of Waverly put up 14 points vs the Wildcats 7 to take 4 point lead heading into the final period ... Trey Robertson put up 7 points on the board with a triple and a pair of 2 pointers/ Robertson "the Younger" - freshman, Braylon Robertson added a 3 pointer ... taking the Robertson Bros. 10 points, a 2 pointer from Will Futhey down low, and 2/2 from the FT line from Kelly the Tigers held Newark to 3 fgs in the period , 2 fgs from Schell and one by Ethan Stare to go with Somers 1/2 from the line - the Tigers looked "in charge" with the defense being played by the Tigers in that 3rd period ... Waverly 39 Newark 35 after 3 ... the first 1:55 of the 4th was all Tigers as they took their largest lead of the game up 7 at 6:05 on the clock ... after playing a solid 3rd period in which they outscored NHS 14-7 and had zero turnovers after the 6:05 mark of the 4th the Tigers had 5 TOs , took some questionable 3 pointers in moments when the clock was their friend ... all of which allowed the D1 Wildcats to get back in the game... at 5:39 in the period the Wildcats had whittled the score down to 40-44 ... 1:46 to play Waverly was on top 47-46 ... a pair of Grant Burkholder gave the Wildcats a 1 point lead at 48-47 with 1:33 to play ... a 2 pointer by the Tigers with :29.7 on the clock gave the Tigers a 49-48 lead ... Robertson the elder sank a pair of FTs with 24.5 on the clock gave WHS a 51-48 lead ... Grant Somers hit a 3 ball with 8.5 on the clock knotted the score at 51-51 ... overtime ... a 16-12 fourth period for Newark ... Somers with 5 points including the big time 3 pointer in the final 10 secs to tie the game, Schell a 3 pointer, 5 points for Burkholder 3 FTs included the second of 2 giving the Wildcats the lead at 1:33 ... 3 pts for Oberholtzer ... programs - teams who have a history of winning do the little things right down the stretch ... the Wildcats won the little things beating Waverly 2 turnovers to 5 in the fourth, 4/5 from the FT line in the closing seconds to tie the game and push ahead to force Waverly to make good decisions and make shots ... Waverly got big three pointers from the freshman Robertson (2 in the 4th period) , 4 points from Trey Robertson, 2 from Will Futhey ... the turnovers, a couple of missed opportunities on the blocks that weren't converted gave Newark the opportunity to tie the game in the 4th ... Newark 51 Waverly 51 after regulation ... the final score 60-55 Wildcats would indicate that Newark owned the OT, but when you look closer NHS led by 1 at :30.5 to play 56-55 Wildcats ... 4 points from Will Futhey in the paint was all WHS could muster ... 0/3 from the line in OT - missed opportunity to keep on the pressure, Burkholtzer again converted for Newark at the line converting on 2 FTS with :23 sec on the clock to make the score 58-55 ... Meister added 2/2 from the line with :09 on the clock gave the Wildcats the final margin 60-55 ... Newark 60 Waverly 55 a final in OT ...
