South Webster 71
Raceland 58 a final
... Thursday tip off of games between SEOhio teams vs the world - in this case South Webster vs Raceland KY ... the Raceland Rams entered the contest with a 4-3 record led by seniors Christian Large and 6-6 Connor Sutton ... the Rams are young! as the remaining starters were jr. Conner Thacker/fr. Jacob Waller/fr Jonah Arnett ... off the bench soph Parker Ison/soph Gavin Valandingham/soph Eli Caines/6-7 soph Charles Welch ... Raceland plays a deliberate, TEAM brand of basketball (anyone looking to fill a slot in an "in-season" classic THIS might be a TEAM to look at - solid)...
... the Jeeps of South Webster entered the holiday classic at 5-0 ...Coach Persin brought his 783 wins along for the ride ... the driver of the bus was/is 6-7 Eli Roberts (averaging 24 ppg) ... as an opposing coach you KNOW "who" you have to stop, but the bigger question is "What do you take away from a player who can literally and figuratively - Do it all ! ? ... 24.4 ppg/8.8 rpg/70% from the FT line/ 4 threes entering yesterday's matchup ... Mr. Roberts raised the averages in ALL of those categories as the 6-7 jr. threw up a napkin stat line of 32 pts/ 3 treys/ 13 for 13 from the FT line to lead South Webster to a 71-58 win ...
... it was a competitive game throughout as Raceland put up 11 points in the opening qtr led by Christian Large's 3 pointer & drive to the rim (5pts) freshman Jonah Arnett with a pair of deuces (4pts) and jr. Connor Thacker a transition bucket for the Rams (11pts)... Roberts opened the scoring for SW splashing a deep 3 ball ... Roberts would finish the period with 9pts to match running mate Tyler Sommer's 9 pts on a pair of drives to the rim, a transition 2 pointer and quarter ending 3 pointer ... South Webster 18 Raceland 11 after 1 ... Raceland got their big man in the post involved in the 2nd as 6-6 Connor Sutton added a couple of putback buckets off of offensive boards to go with a dropstep basket off the right block for 2 more (6pts) , fellow senior Christian Large added 5 more points (10pts in the half) , soph Parker Ison added a triple coming off the bench to go with Jonah Arnett's 2/2 from the charity stripe ... the Rams outscored the Jeeps 17-13 in the 2nd to draw within 3 ... RHS kept the Roberts/Sommer combo in check - holding each to 1 fg and a pair of FTs each ... coming in off the bench Jack Timothy knocked down a pair of 2 pters and 1/1 from the line ... South Webster 31 Raceland 28 at the half ... the 3rd was an offensive back and forth as both teams put up points on each others defense ... the Rams were paced by Large's 7 pts including 1 triple/ freshman Jonah Arnett continued to impress adding 8 pts and freshman Jacob Waller contributed a 3 ball to give RHS 20 points in the quarter ... 1 point better than the Jeeps ... Roberts continued his steady/consistent offensive play putting up 10 pts in the qtr including his 2nd triple ... Sommer was held to a 3 ball (3pts) ...Dylan Shupert with 2pts and Timothy 4 points ... I was very impressed with BOTH teams through 3 ... Raceland playing good TEAM basketball/ nothing flashy just a solid effort at both ends ... South Webster showed the difference in last years team vs this year version of the Jeeps - patience ... nothing forced offensively ... Roberts - looking to make the extra pass ... shot selection is vastly improved ... as the TEAM appears more "under control" ( Coach Persin's signature on the team) ... South Webster 50 Raceland 48 after 3 ... through 3 quarters the Big 3 for the Jeeps (Roberts/Sommer/Timothy) had scored 48 of the SW 50 points ... in the 4th - nothing changed offensively as the combination of inside/outside by the 3 amigos continued as Roberts (9pts) added a triple plus 6/6 from the FT line, Jack Timothy led all scorers in the 4th with 10 points and Tyler Sommer added 2 pointer ... the SW defense on the ball picked up, taking away open looks ... only forcing 1 turnover but nothing inside or outside was open for the Rams as they were held to 10pts in the qtr - 4pts in the paint from Sutton/Connor Thacker 4pts/ and 2 pts from Large ... SW owned the quarter 21-10 and the 13 point W ... South Webster 71 Raceland 58 a final ...
