Will be curious of Pfloyd's take on this one. South Webster about what I expected but Trimble has surprised me a bit. However, the TVC is taking it on the chin today.

Waterford 45 final
I may have overestimated Waterford earlier. Lack some discipline and maybe a piece or two. Eastern got whipped but MC is very very good. Not knocking Philo but I don't think they are on that level. I think Eastern is firmly #2 in the TVC with what Waterford showed today. I do realize they just got out of football and it was evident in this game but they have quite a bit of work to do.

Waterford is definitely going to need a little time. Three of their starters had less than a week on the court, and Pennock has been out most of football season with an injury, so the rust was obvious. They weren’t quite in sync yet, and the physicality had more of a “football carryover” feel than a polished basketball flow.

I saw them play Morgan on Wednesday, and they actually looked much better. Their #12 is a real athlete—still a bit rough around the edges, but he put together two strong games. He gets up and down the floor in about five steps, and he and #10 work the blocks really well. Today #12 finished with 19 points and around 10–11 rebounds, and on Wednesday he had 19 and was close to another double-double.

Once they settle in, I think they’ll be fine. I’m not entirely sure they have the right starting lineup yet, though. Their big man coming off the bench is really solid under the basket—strong finishes, good paint presence—and could be a difference-maker with more minutes.

I watched the coaches a lot in the second half, and they clearly know what needs work. It’s hard to judge too much when you’ve only had the full team for a week and then played two games in three days. There’s definitely work to do, but also a lot of potential.

They play Eastern on Friday, so that matchup should give a better picture of where they really stand

Southern with 2 points in the second quarter and 3 points in the fourth. Not a great recipe but i think they fix things as time moves on. Caldwell will continue to be a thorn for people moving forward as well.
I watched the livestream today, Caldwell was down 19-4 i believe at one point. They really locked in defensively from that point on. The big kid for Southern is really good but missed some key shots at the rim. I wondered what Caldwell would look like, they lost a lot to graduation but I was pleasantly surprised. Their senior returning starting point guard Erb was out injured today, heard he’ll be back soon which will let them take the Schott kid off the point. He is a really good player. Looks like a good year ahead for Caldwell.

I was very impressed with both the Caldwell Redskins (vs Southern) and the Monroe Central Seminoles (vs Reedsville Eastern). I did not watch the last few games but I’m sure South Webster was as advertised.

Caldwell: After the 1st quarter, Caldwell was extremely disciplined on defense. They contested nearly everything and closed out very well. I was impressed with Coach Crane for the ‘skins …he coached them hard and was very encouraging.

Southern: They seemed out of sync and outside of Andre Chandler & Reed Brinager, they have little offensive help and/or quickness….I’m hoping they get it figured out and become a tough out come tournament time. Brinager can really play. I’d like to see more sets geared towards feeding him the ball in the post or having him come off screens. Coach Caldwell has a great opportunity to win a lot of games this year. I see them as the champion or runner up in the TVC-Hocking.

Monroe Central: The ‘Noles are very well coached. They play hard, pressure a ton, create a lot of turnovers, and have Championship experience. I believe they can handle ball pressure as well, which really determines how far teams go in the tourney (especially for Eastern and Southeastern District teams). Caeydn Silva, Corbin Farnsworth, and Cooper Howell are all phenomenal. They will win a lot of games. I wish them a great/healthy season.

Reedsville Eastern: The Eagles are solid. Most likely they just ran into the best team they’ll play this year. I’m thinking they are missing Sr Ethan Edwards who is an experienced/solid Guard….very good athlete as well. I’m hoping he will make it back on the court. Colton Lloyd posses a problem for opposing teams with his versatility and height (6’7”). I see them finishing 1,2, or 3 in the TVC-Hocking this year.

Philo: The Electrics play hard and edgy. Rusty Trout is heckuva athlete…if he can keep his composure, he’ll have another All-MVL year. Carter Crabtree has a solid stroke from long distance and can get hot quick. KJ Philip was selected the “Clash” player of the game for Philo. Sr Camden Stoner was on the bench in street clothes, he’s 6’5” and can move…I’m thinking he was on one of the All-MVL teams last year. If Coach Trout is as good of a coach as what he was as a player, Philo will make some noise this year. They have a lot of pieces to win 14 plus games this season.

Waterford: The Wildcats had some nice pieces. Coach Cunningham and Assistant Coach Roe are a great combo. Waterford will go as Gavin Heiner goes. He’s a raw basketball player but most likely will be the strongest, fastest, best leaper in the TVC-Hocking. He finishes very well around the rim. I’m hoping his braced knee stays healthy. Guard, Finn Pennock seems like he can break out any game. The Wildcats
have a couple of other solid role players as well. I’m looking for H2O-Ford to win 13 plus games and finish 2 or 3 in the TVC-Hocking.

I’m wish I could have watched Stormin’ Norman’s, South Webster Jeeps and Blain Maddox's, Warren Warriors play their separate games on day one. Whether it’s a shootout or a regular season invitational, Coach Duckworth, AD Steve Harold and company always put on a first class event @ The Coliseum.

The Caldwell/Southern matchup was the best game of the day, hands down. Southern really leans on just two guys—Brinegar and Chandler. When Chandler got into foul trouble and had to sit, it became obvious they don’t have much depth behind him. He’s fast, handles the ball extremely well, and as their PG he’s going to be a problem for every team in the TVC.

Brinegar is solid too and finishes well around the rim, but he tries to do a little too much at times. You can tell he’s hunting the “highlight” play. When he gets in foul trouble, they just don’t have another player with his size or skill to keep them in games. One thing that stood out: Southern had a lot to say—both to the refs and to Caldwell’s players. They’ll cause issues for teams in the TVC, but they’re definitely beatable with disciplined defense.

Caldwell, meanwhile, put on an absolute defensive clinic. They were down double digits multiple times and fought back every time. #4 and #33 were given tough assignments and did exactly what they needed to do shutting down Southern’s top guys. #33 is a heck of a ballplayer, and #1 carried the offensive load—great game on both ends.

And credit to Caldwell’s coach. I was sitting right above their bench, and you can tell the players respect him. He coaches to win and he emphasizes defense, which was a huge part of why they came out with the W

I think that was a game that will be good for both teams moving forward. I admit I don’t know much about the TVC but the big kid and the point guard for Southern are fantastic high school players. I’m looking forward to Caldwell/MC in January, I might have to make the trip back home for it. I agree about coach, he coached my son who now coaches for him, the kids like and respect him and play hard for him. Caldwell has been a consistent winner since he got there, that was not the case before and i give him credit for staying and not talent chasing which he could easily have done over the years. Though I think marrying a Caldwell girl probably had a lot to do with him sticking around.

The Southern/Caldwell game was the best I saw competitive wise. The turning point came late when Southern turned the ball over in-bounding the ball that led into an and-one for Caldwell giving them their first lead of the game. It was a good opening game match-up for both teams that will lead to a lot of over reactions one way or the other similar to week 1 of the NFL.

I’ve seen Southern play more than Caldwell, never seen them miss so many point blank shots. Was it Caldwell’s defense…maybe, maybe not. I think both teams will look much more efficient in game 2.
