Will Deer Eat Sunflower Plants?
Anyone know if they will or not? Wanting my SS class to start a little flower garden and wondering if they would eat them or not so I'd know whether to have some kind of fence before it

If the birds don't get them when they pop through the ground, the deer will more than likely get them when they get about a foot or so tall. I ran into that problem a few years ago and had to plant them up closer to the house.

Go ahead and plant them out in the open. Then teach the kids that venison is good to eat, too.

Hadn't thought about this before as I plant a few sunflowers at the end of my garden and never had any eaten. And there are 5 or 6 deer that are around here all the time. I can till the garden and within two days there are deer tracks through it.
I searched and first site found says "YEP" they love them. And also searching for fence, it is reported that deer can jump almost 8 foot fences. So best bet is a 4 foot fence with a doberman inside

My greatest problem is with rabbits eating my sweet potato plants the same day I plant them. Good thing I raised extras last year. And the Irish potatoes I planted a few days after St Pat day, are just poppin through the crust. And I didn't plant by the moon.
If I have any extra sweet potato plants, would your SS Class want a few? I'll be starting those next week. They are easy to grow and should be planted after last frost.

Hmmmmmmmm I don't know what to do..but..the garden wouldn't be that wide, just a narrow long one so I might be able to put wire up. I've read about deer repellents that suggest different levels of effectiveness. I'd hate for them all to show up one Sunday and see everything had been eaten

You could also try using mothballs. I use them around and in the garden and have not had a single deer in it the past few years due to them being on the ground. The mothballs do not hurt the plants either. We also put several in the flower beds to help keep moles out.

I don't know if this would actually work and it might be kind of extreme, but what about urinating around your garden area. I wonder if that scent would keep the deer out? I don't mean actually inside the garden, but out around the perimeter of it.

I've heard that you could take human hair and put it in bags and then tie them around the garden as they would smell that and keep them away. I just don't know if I could urinate that much outside...
I could see it now though..ok kids, we've got this planted..now..every gather around and pee on it.... YIKES!
