Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
The WV BURG will win this one.

Pburg will roll. Their 1-3 record is very deceptive.
And Marietta is, well, ....Marietta.

Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
When’s the last time they beat a good team ? Their athletics is really struggling right now. Football has been bad for a while.
Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
I know very little about the Parkersburg Big Red. I think there is also Parkersburg South high school. Is the Big Red usually a lot more dominate when it comes to there athletic teams? I think they may be also a lot larger than South.
Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
Parkersburg South has a higher enrollment than Parkersburg Big Reds.
Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
Thank you. I would guess that they play each other. Who usually has the upper hand in Football?
Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
According to WVSSAC, PHS has about 1800 students while South has around 1600. PHS has the much more rich football history, claiming 16 state titles (some resources list only 11 - 3 official sportswriter polls and 8 playoffs). South was dismal for a long time, but have had a few good stretches, including a State Title in the early 2000s with former Caldwell/Warren and now-Belpre coach Mile DeVol.
PHS has a TE this year who recently committed to Ohio State.
These teams started playing in 1901 and have played over 100 times (had some breaks, but also played twice a year way back when not many schools had teams). The newspaper used to give this game a lot of extra coverage and old-timers (like people who are no longer living) from Marietta always saw PHS as a big rival, but PHS seems to have dominated in my lifetime (40+ years) and it hasn’t seemed to be as big of a deal more recently (and maybe it was never as big to PHS as it was to Marietta).
Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
Thank you very much. That helped clear things up. I had always heard about the Parkersburg Big Red, but didn't really know anything about them or South.
Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
Also, they are the Big Reds, plural. I only point that out because Steubenville goes by Big Red and on a previous message board, they were the ONLY school permitted to use the nickname in a thread title. I don’t want anyone scalping you over an “s”.
Re: Parkersburg (1-3) @ Marietta (2-2)
Steubenville is the big red because their mascot on the scoreboard with the flames shooting out his nostril's is a "Big Red Horse"

Big Reds Meet Marietta For 114th Time
from www.phsbigredsfootball.com
The oldest high school football rivalry in West Virginia and one of the oldest in the country will resume Friday night when the Marietta Tigers play host to the Parkersburg Big Reds at 7 o'clock.
It will be the 114th meeting between the two Ohio River neighbors with PHS having won 78 with six ties.
The teams met every year from 1901 to 1958 (some times twice a year) when the rivalry was stopped after a 69-7 PHS victory. It was not resumed until 1964 when it continued with only a brief break (1970) until 1995. From 1995 through 2008 the series sat idle until resumption in 2009. The Big Reds proceeded to win six straight times until Marietta notched a 27-20 win in 2015 and repeated with a victory in 2016 before PHS posted a 45-10 triumph a year ago.
