... I stayed within walking distance, 9 hrs, from home Tuesday night ... taking in my #3 team in the preseason rankings the Jackson Ironmen of Coach Morrow and the #28 team in the rankings the Logan Elm Braves of Coach Dropsey ... LE having already punched their first win of the season at the Zane Trace Classic beating a very good Bexley team 50-46 ... for Jackson it was their opening game of the 2025-26 campaign , sporting a starting 5 of all seniors ...all playing within the top 6 or 7 for JHS for the last 3 years - all with significant varsity experience ... Jackson looking to dethrone Miami Trace for the top spot in the FAC while Logan Elm (Mid State League) looks to improve on last years 5-17 regular season record ...

... When I think of Jackson basketball thru the last few seasons - tough , physical man to man D, patient offensively, few perimeter shots from beyond the arc, motion offense working to get the shot Coach Morrow wants from a position on the floor that Coach Morrow wants ... some things never change as the Ironmen controlled the ball, the tempo in the opening quarter getting 4 of their 5 starters in the scoring column led by 6-2 sr. Bodhi Wolford's 6 pts - all at the rim, 2 fgs on transition buckets ... 6-2 sr Steven Jenkins added a drive and score 2pts and a midrange jumper 2pts ... 5-9 sr. Jx Carroll drained a trey from beyond the arc 3pts and guard Ryan Seimetz went coast to coast for a transition bucket 2pts ... while the offense for JHS was clicking both in the halfcourt and in transition, the Defense was making life tough for Logan Elm, the Braves found the bottom of the net only twice in the opening period - 5-10 jr Owen Russell with triple 3pts and 5-11 sr. Doren Patton with a trey from deep 3pts ... Jackson 15 Logan Elm 6 after one ... Quarter 2 was played virtually even as the Ironmen continued to spread the wealth with 5 players putting up points on the napkin stat sheet - Jax Carroll drained his second triple of the game 3pts/ Charlie Woodard scored a pair of fgs on the blocks 4pts/ 6-4 jr. Cj Crabtree entered the game and dropped the Ironmen's 2nd trey of the period 3pts / Eli Ray 6-0 sr gave the offense bench support adding 2 points in the paint on a nice dime from Jax Carroll 2pts / Bodhi Wolford added a transition bucket at the rim giving the Ironmen 9 fgs/18 pts in the opening 2 quarters inside the paint at the rim ... Logan Elm finally found the range in the 2nd period - not from deep (LE was 2/10 from behind the 3 point line in the first 2 qtrs) but from the paint and a couple of midrange jumpers ... Doren Patton continued to supply offense off the bench with a drive and score 2pts to go with a midrange jumper 2pts ... Russell did damage getting to the rim for a pair of buckets 4pts/7 in the half ... starters Brady Neff and Kelton Bennington got in the scoring column each with a bucket 2pts ... Jackson extended its lead to 11 at the half ... Jackson 29 Logan Elm 18 at intermission ... coming out of halftime Coach Morrow focused his Ironmen on the opening 4 minutes of action ... control the opening 4 minutes, keep LE from cutting into the lead & building momentum ... if there was any downside to the Jackson game thru 2 qtrs it was in the turnover column ... through 2 quarters the Ironmen tallied 10 miscues ... JHS followed Coach Morrow's directions - control the opening 4 minutes ... by 2:26 on the clock JHS had held LE to 5 pts while putting up 7 of their own ... in the final 2:26 LE outscored JHS 6-2 to close out the 3rd getting the lead under 10 pts heading into the final period of play ... JHS added 4 more turnovers to their total of now 14 TOs thru 3 while forcing LE into 10 turnovers total ... Jackson was led by Bodhi Wolford's 4 points as the senior had the only Jackson putback off of an offensive board in the game 2pts to go with a drive and finish at the rim 2pts ... Steven Jenkins added a drive & score 2 pts along with 1/2 from the FT line ... Jax Carroll continued his consistent scoring from the perimeter, this time going outside in to the rim for 2 points in the lane ... Logan Elm kept the game within reach with a pair of threes in the quarter - one each by Austin Holbrook & Kelton Bennington ... 6-1 sr Zane Seimer added 2pts in the paint, Brady Neff converted on one of JHS' 4 TOs in the period for 2pts in transition ... Jackson 38 Logan Elm 29 after 3 ... with the number of turnovers that Jackson had thru 3 (14) and LE down by under 10 ... IF LE could get some stops, turn up the defensive pressure AND drop a few buckets - the Braves would be right back in the game ... Jackson accommodated LE as the Braves turned up the D, forced 3 more JHS turnovers while trapping on the perimeter ... LE held Jackson scoreless thru the opening 2 minutes & 30 seconds of the 4th ... cutting the lead to 5 points at 33-38 with 5:30 on the clock on a bucket in the paint by Brady Neff and a transition bucket by 6-2 sr. Lucas Bialy 2pts ... Steven Jenkins broke the scoreless run by Jackson going 2/2 from the FT line ... Jenkins added another pair of FTs to go with Bodhi Wolford's transition bucket at the rim to give Jackson a 6-0 run to push the lead back up to 11 pts 44-33 with 4:25 to play ... the rest of the period was played out almost even as Jackson put up 17 points to LE's 15 to close out the game ... Logan Elm's big scorer in the period was Brady Neff who knocked down 11 pts in the 4th/15 for the game ... Jackson was paced by Steven Jenkins' 8/8 from the line .. Charlie Woodard's 6pts/10 on the game ... Jax Carroll picked up a big trey in the period 3pts/his 3rd triple of the game ... Dayton Kallner came off the bench to add 2pts in the paint ... Seimetz handled the LE pressure well, adding 2 pts from the line in the closing seconds of the game ...Jackson 61 Logan Elm 48 a final ...

Incredible rundown @pfloyd , as always. It was great to see a pretty full gym in LE. I overheard an LE fan mention that they'll have to add more hand sinks in the restroom if they continue to pull in crowds like last night! That's a great problem for high school basketball.

Appreciate reading the recaps!

Jackson needs to minimize those TOs. In an offense that doesn't really allow for a lot of shots, TOs are costly missed opportunities.
And I was really impressed with LE's rebounding and just physicality in general. There were multiple times during that game that LE was playing more physical than Jackson, and that's not super common for Jackson opponents.

Looked like there was still some football fatigue that will go away as they get into basketball conditioning. Would like to see Jackson be able to bury some teams in the 4th quarter this year especially teams they are superior to.

I know I am late asking this, but why did Logan Elm feel the need to make the new gymnasium so small? The former gym was so much bigger as far as seating capacity and I can recall being at numerous games during the Stiverson era when that old gym would be packed! The new gym appears to have less than half the seats as the former gym did. The new one is a nice little gym, but man I sure miss the old one. As I said, it would get packed and loud! It was no picnic for opposing teams to come into and play.
