... the opening game of the Mark Porter Spartan Classic , the 3-4 Athens Bulldogs taking on the 7-0 Peebles Indians out of the SHAC conference on the west side of Rte 23 ... Coach Arey of Peebles boasts a roster of seasoned upperclassmen to go with a talented group of underclassmen headed by 6-5 fr. big man in the post Keegan Puckett and soph sharpshooting guard Bo Johnson who entered the game putting up 17ppg - unfortunately Johnson has been sidelined for a couple of games with an ankle injury ... even without Johnson, the Indians had a rotation of 9 players - lots of skill players with talent for Peebles ... the PHS MO is that they put up a lot of perimeter shots, in the opening quarter the Indians launched 6 triples draining 3 - one each by 6-1 jr. Connor Gross, 5-10 sr Paxton Ryan, and 6-0 jr Josh Clary ... usually a team that puts up 3's has to due to not having size in the paint, no inside game ... the 2025-26 version of the Indians HAS size in the paint in 6-5 freshman Keegan Puckett - the talented post player opened with a midrange jumper for 2 points and an offensive board & putback for 2pts ... closing out the Peebles scoring was 6-0 sr Colyn Sims getting his own offensive board & putback 2pts ... the young Athens squad for Coach Cozart - with only 3 seniors - have their own 8 man rotation ... countering the 17 point Peeble's 1st qtr tally, the Bulldogs put up 9 pts - an opening 3 ball by 6-1 soph Wren Ballew 3pts, 5-10 soph Collin Chapman got a step on his defender as he took it to the hole & finished 2pts/ 6-4 sr Zachariah Mullins & 5-11 soph Jaxon Warner each pulled down an offensive board & scored on stickbacks 2pts each ... Peebles 17 Athens 9 after one ... Athens settled into a better offensive flow as the Bulldogs dropped 15 points in the 2nd led by 5-11 soph Jaxon Warner's 8 pts in the paint (3fgs & 2/2 from the line) ... Chapman & 5-8 freshman Luke Robey knocked down a 3 pointer apiece ... Peebles was just as effective in the 2nd as they were in the first period netting 17 more points ... the 6-5 frehsman Puckett showed good footwork & soft hands while getting to the rim for 6 pts/10 pts for the half ... 6-0 sr. Grady Knechtly added 4pts with 2pts on the block & a midrange jumper for 2 ... PHS added a pair of three pointers one each from Connor Gross & Paxton Ryan ... the Indians were 2/8 from three in the 2nd & 5/14 in the opening half ... Peebles 34 Athens 24 at the break ... coming out of the locker room, the Bulldogs had their best offensive quarter as Athens scored 17 pts while closing out on the defensive end holding Peebles to 11 pts and "0" three pointers ... offensively for Athens Collin Chapman - known for knocking down 3's - used that scouting report info as he was able to get a step on the closing defender to get to the rim twice for 4 pts and taking one of the 4 Peebles turnovers to the house for 2pts/6 in the qtr. , Zachariah Mullins stepped out beyond the arc for a deep trey 3pts and added 2pts on a putback bucket ... Ballew and Robey each connected from behind the three point line to get their 2nd trey of the game ... Athens defensively forced 4 Peebles turnovers and took away looks from behind the arc as PHS was only able to get off 1 triple in the quarter - a miss ... having a 6-5 post player in the paint is a great luxury to have - as the Athens D took away the perimeter looks, the big man in the paint - Keegan Puckett added 6 pts in the lane for PHS ... the only other points for Peebles in the quarter were a midrange jumper by Colyn Sims and a drive & finish by Connor Gross ... Peebles 45 Athens 41 after 3 ... Athens through 3 qtrs had put up 17 threes making 6 ... in the 4th the Bulldogs shot 11 treys making 3 to finish the game 9/28 from behind the arc ... Chapman connected on 2 threes in the qtr to go with a drive & finish 2pts ... the talented freshman pg Luke Robey added 5pts on a triple & putback bucket ... the only other points were Jaxon Warner's 2/4 from the line ... not nearly enough points as Peebles went 3 for 3 from behind the 3 point line in the qtr ... 8/18 on the game ... led by jr. Thanks Pfloyd. The Indians have some things to clean up before the one and done ,but; Coach is gonna get it worked out. Big game Tuesday at Peebles . Hoping for an Indian winin what looks to be a barn burner. My only problem with this game is,I will be out of town. I will be expecting someone to post scores and stats for that one.

The Peebles vs Eastern Brown game is being live-streamed by at least SOSA maybe even the GoodGuys network … pfloyd will be in the house as well ! I’m thinking this one will be covered for you Hoopie74 !

I think he's gonna be ready. Josh won't put him out there if he's not ready. Sophmore Bo Johnson and freshman Keegan Pucketts mothers were starters on Peebles State finals game against Chagrin Falls in 1998. Bo being out has allowed coach to play a few very capable reserve players to expand his roster. It's a learning process , but; these kids love to be challenged. I think this is the deepest team Josh has had . Safe travels everyone and go Indians.
