... Coach Gabriel told me that I would be seeing a bunch of "youngsters" before the tip off of Nelsonville York vs Warren , I politely reminded him that THAT would be on both sides as both NY and Warren have only 2 seniors on either teams roster ... mark it down now - BOTH of these teams will be very good NEXT season and you better not sleep on them THIS season ...as we get into the 2026 portion of the schedule both teams are figuring out the varsity game - it's fun to watch knowing what each will have coming back for the 2026-27 season - no starting from scratch, no "figuring out" the strength/speed/opponents talent at the varsity level ... the game will be slowed down, the nuances of positions can be taught vs getting players in the right spots on the floor etc etc etc. when you've got the fundamentals of the game down, reading defenses/running offenses become second nature - going to be fun to watch ... excellent first game for the first game out of the box on Day 2 of the Spartan Classic !

... both teams struggled to take care of the ball in the opening 8 minutes as Warren coughed it up 5 times vs 6 by the Buckeyes ... Cameron Sullivan for NY showed what the Buckeyes are capable of doing on any night with their strength & football size inside - pounding the ball down low/attacking the paint/rim is the name of the game ... Sullivan had a putback bucket 2pts to go with getting passes into the paint where the linebacker size post player scored at the rim 4pts ... Athens transfer swing forward Weston Wheatley added a strong putback bucket to get the Buckeyes to 8 pts in the quarter ... Warren had a tough time finding the bottom of the net as the Warriors had but 2 fgs in the period - Liam Grosselin off the bench scored on a drive/finish & 1 for 3pts ... 6-2 sr post/fwrd Caleb Tullius added a strong drive to the rim for 2 ... both teams were 0 for 3 from behind the arc in the opening 8 minutes of play ... Nelsonville York 8 Warren 5 after 1 ... the second period started like the first period with neither team lighting up the nets ... at 5:17 in the qtr NY led 14-9 and 16-11 with 4:11 to play in the period ... jr Gavin Lavy with a drive and finish at the rim for 2 & 1 3pts for NY , Weston Wheatley added a 3 ball from downtown, Lavy followed with 2 pts in the lane ... Warren got a 12 footer from Grosselin 2pts, 6-2 jr Shawn Adams scored on an offensive rebound stickback 2 pts, 6-2 sr Caleb Tullius got a strip steal and score for 2 pts ... in the final 4 minutes & change NY dropped 11 and Warren 17 points to heat up the Alley in Albany ... for Nelsonville York sr Bean Martin drilled a trey from the wing 3pts/ Wheatley added a transition bucket 2pt/ 5 in the qtr for the junior ... soph Grant Elliott added 2/2 from the line and Gavin Lavy closed out the Buckeye scoring with a make/make from the FT line to go with another NY score in transition 2pts/9 for Lavy in the qtr ... Warren's offense got a boost of adrenalin as 6-1 sr PG Hudson Elzey drained a deep three 3pts, Blake Grimes followed with a drive to the rim for 2 pts, 5-10 soph Jackson Perdue who has been THE guy for the Warriors on the scoresheet in the early part of the season, got on the napkin stat sheet with a steal and score in transition 2pts, Perdue in short order followed up by using his quickness to get to the rim for an easy bucket 2pts, not finished, the sharpshooting soph got a good look from behind the arc - drained the 3 /7 pts in the qtr for Perdue ...6-3 soph Blake Grimes scored on a drive & finish for 2 "and one" 3pts/ 5 in the qtr ... the sophs finished off the scoring in the 2nd when 6-4 Ryder Gorham scored on the blocks 2pts to give the Warriors a one point lead heading into the locker room ... Warren 28 Nelsonville York 27 at the break ...in a game that both teams struggled to get started in the opening quarter the second kickstarted the offenses - NY's 19 and Warren 23 pts in the 2nd period ... the 3rd was just quarter number 2 continued as both teams put up points ... Nelsonville York continued to be led by Gavin Lavy, the talented junior put up 10 pts in the period - 2/2 from the line, a drive to the rim for 2pts, saw what he liked from behind the arc and drained a trey 3pts, all before driving into the paint where he scored and was fouled 3pts ... Bean Martin added a pair of buckets in the lane 4pts, Cameron Sullivan got a back door pass to finish at the rim 2pts ... a 21 pt quarter for the Buckeyes ended up not enough as the Warriors Jackson Perdue picked up where he left off in the 2nd quarter when he had 7 pts, in the 3rd Perdue started calmly with the 5-10 so. going 1/2 from the line, a drive & score 2pts, 4/4 from the FT line, 4 more drives & finishes at the rim 8pts, and a transition bucket 2pts , when the dust settled Perdue had 15 pts in the qtr/22 thru 3 qtrs of action ... one thing has shown in all of the games in the last 3-4 weeks, the Warriors have scorerS , plural, balanced scoring - in the 3rd as Perdue carried the load Coach Maddox got points from Shawn Adams in the paint 2pts/ Blake Grimes his 3rd bucket in the paint attacking the rim 2pts/ sr Caleb Tullius is the strongest Warrior,as he showed with a strong drive and finish 2pts/ Hudson Elzey one of the 2 senior leaders has learned to pick his spots, in the 3rd the sr. took a steal to the house for 2pts in transition ... as the buzzer sounded the Warriors although giving up 21 pts scored 23 to extend their lead heading to the final 8 minutes ... Warren 51 Nelsonville York 48 end of three ... youngsters, basketball, learning how to win at the varsity level - tough lesson but a lesson to learn none the less ... both teams struggled in the final 8 minutes from the line ... the Buckeyes hitting on 2 of 6 charity attempts ... Warren faired better hitting on 6 of 10 FTs in the period ... Perdue had burned NY for 22 points in 2 qtrs of action - Coach Gabriel took his scoring away in the 4th qtr ... no fgs ... 1/2 from the line ... at 7:12 on the clock the score stood at 49-53 Warren ... NY went on a 5-1 run to tie the game at 54-54 with 3:24 to play ... Tullius had a score in the paint for Warren 2pts and Perdue's 1/2 from the line ... Sullivan went 1/2 from the FT line ,6-4 soph Champ Schultz for NY got a transition bucket 2pts, Grant Elliott another of the talented sophs for NY 2pts on a drive/score & 1 to get it to the 54-54 score ... at 1:26 Warren had regained the lead with a 7-2 run ... kickstarted by one of the old men on the team sr. Hudson Elzey picking the right time to drain a deep three pointer to give WHS a 57-54 lead, Lavy answered with a drive and finish 2 pts for NY ... Blake Grimes went miss/miss at the line then followed up with a score in the paint 2pts, Liam Grosselin with a big time steal & score in transition to make it 61-56 at 1:28 to play Warren ... at 20.1 Warren on the back of FT makes by Sam Adams made the score 64-58 Warriors ...
