... when you looked at the menu of games for the Spartan Classic this one , Meigs vs Waverly, was the marque game of the day ... both playing big time schedules, both played Friday night games - Meigs dropping a big game on the road @ Marietta , a 38 pt loss while the Tigers of Waverly took an 11 pt loss on the road @ Wheelersburg ... both teams having to deal with "team" issues - Meigs' leading scorer, D1 recruit 6-8 senior Carson Davis was throwing up all morning, but gutted it out on the court vs Waverly ... Waverly was down 2 starters 6-3 jr Teagan Hurt who had knee surgery on Christmas eve/out for the season and starter number 2, freshman Kai Keesee was out with an ankle injury/did not play vs Wheelersburg Friday night he was taped up for this one vs Meigs & looked to see some playing time ...
... I was asked prior to the game, "Who you got in this one?" ... my answer was that IF Waverly was at full strength (not down 2 starters) I would go with Waverly ... down 2 starters imo it was a toss up ... for Waverly the role players needed to ADD roles to their plates - had to pick up the scoring as Hurt was outstanding in the transition game and gives WHS a consistent 3 point threat , his 6-3 size with length made him valuable on the perimeter defensively & added size on the boards ... Meigs on paper has 3 solid players in Davis/Tracy & Beucler after that scoring is at a premium, any points are a bonus which has happened (ie. in the Meigs win over Warren role player Griffin Hudson scored 9 pts on putback/garbage buckets - Meigs won by 7) the Meigs trio of Davis/Tracy/Beucler will draw the opponents top defenders ... the winner of this one was going to be determined by the marque players stepping up and how good was the defense on either side in limiting the damage done by the top players as well as which "role players" would step up either on the scoreboard or defensively ...
... the opening quarter had both teams defensively forcing 3 turnovers each with neither team capitalizing on the scoreboard ... Owen Tracy for Meigs took the lid off with a drive & score for the Marauders 2pts ... 6-2 soph Colben Beucler scored in the paint 2pts before Carson Davis knocked down back to back triples 6pts in the qtr. Beucler added a drive to the rim and finish to go with a bonus bucket in the paint by 5-9 jr Griffin Hudson ... a 15 point 8 minutes for the Marauders ... Waverly got 10 pts in the paint from Myers "squared" (Gunnar 8pts and Sawyer 2 pts all at the rim inside ) ... maybe the best player on the court on any given night vs any opponent, 6-1 soph Kage Alexander drove to the rim & finished 2pts before hitting a pullup 15 footer 2pts ... Meigs 15 Waverly 14 after 1 ... when teams are down key players defense becomes BIG ... can the players stepping in keep the defensive rotations seamless, on the offensive end can the role players makeup points that are taken off the board when bodies go down ... in the 2nd the Waverly D was outstanding - turning Meigs over 9 times in the qtr. ... held Davis to 5 pts on 2 pts in the paint and one trey ... the rest of team was held scoreless in the period ... while the Tigers stymied the Marauders defensively the Waverly offense put on a show ... 6-3 jr Landyn Russell - coming off of an injury where he missed all but 1 game in the young season - opened the qtr with a triple 3pts/ hit a 12 footer for 2 pts and scored on a dribble drive into the paint 2pts/6pts in the period ... filling in for Teagan Hurt was 5-11 jr Davion McBride, McBride handled the ball well and drained a deep three pointer 3pts ... that left the floor open for Kage Alexander - great ball handling skills, the talented sophomore showed his entire toolbox of skills as he pulled up for a midrange lefthanded jumper 2pts/drained a deep triple 3pts/ hit a floater across the lane 2pts before getting a strip/steal & score in transition ... Waverly forced Meigs to use 3 timeouts in the 8 minutes/4 timeouts used in the opening half of action by MHS ... a 19-5 Waverly offensive quarter opened up the game - advantage Tigers ... Waverly 33 Meigs 20 at the half ... thru the opening 2 quarters the offensive weapons that Meigs brings to the table were held to Davis 11pts/Tracy 2pts/Beucler 3 pts ... role players Hudson 3pts/Cleland 0 pts ... the starters played all 16 minutes ... Waverly down 2 starters got key minutes from McBride who started - 3pts/ off the bench 6-5 soph Garrett Rosenberger was able to play in the paint and hold his own while freshman Kai Keesee, taped up ankle and all, was able get on the floor - gave McBribe a break, handled the ball on the perimeter letting Alexander go to the 2 spot, giving him driving lanes on the wings ...Alexander is going to get HIS during a game - he's that good and only a soph ... Meigs in the 3rd took away the other offensive contributors as the Myers twins were held to 1 fg/3 pts in the 3rd ... Alexander was the only other Tiger to score coming out of the locker room ... 3 drives to the rim with an "and one" - 7pts in the period for Alexander ... no perimeter scoring from behind the arc ... It’s gonna be okay. We’re known as the school for daddy ball. We encourage all of our HC’s to bring their kids into the program and let them do what ever they want. If anyone questions it they get canned. The same is true with football. MHS, daddy ball capital of Ohio.

Never said I coached.
Just have seen Davis coach for years and no matter if he is winning or losing they complain.
And I will be there tomorrow night to root for Meigs even though it isn't my school.

Ryan Davis is a tremendous basketball coach!! And also a very good developer of talent and X and O coach. If it isn’t translating at Meigs then the problem prob isn’t coaching.

The problem at Meigs is daddy ball. They’re winning some games in spite of that. Hopefully they can overcome it.JChipwood wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 1:44 pm Ryan Davis is a tremendous basketball coach!! Many people, those directly involved in high school basketball, would not concur. At least not in the “Carson era”.JChipwood wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 1:44 pm Ryan Davis is a tremendous basketball coach!! And also a very good developer of talent and X and O coach. Facts. If he’s as great as those two guys on here say he is then Daddy ball must be blurring his vision.SouthEast Hoops Fan wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 3:16 pmMany people, those directly involved in high school basketball, would not concur. Re: Waverly 50 Meigs 47 a final
If all the people complaining are such great coaches why didnt they apply. No matter what Meigs does you will call it daddy ball.
Check his record.
Question for Meigs people or a rumor, did a player on the football team supposed to be the coach son go to Vinton County to play basketball. That what I was told last night I don't know just asking.

If you’re such a great coach why didn’t you apply? You seem to think only great coaches are allowed to have an opinion so you must be a great coach, right?peake71 wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 4:02 pm If all the people complaining are such great coaches why didnt they apply. Re: Waverly 50 Meigs 47 a final
The problem is anytime anyone gives one that you disagree with you ask them what their record is or say they should apply for the coaching position. That gives the impression that you think only “great coaches” are capable of having an opinion different than yours. I’m just returning the love by saying you should apply if you are such a great coach that you dare disagree and what is your coaching record by the way? LOL
