SOUTH POINT -- The South Point softball team is coming off a rebuilding year when they finished with a 10-13 record and a sectional final loss to Wellston.
Coach Steve Baise will be starting his sixth season in charge of the Pointers, and he is excited to get started. He has won 52 games in five seasons and believes the Ohio Valley Conference is up for grabs with no clear frontrunner.
On the mound for South Point will be veteran senior pitcher Hannah Hurron and Fresham Sashe' Burcham. With the addition of Burcham this season, Hurron shouldn't have as much pressure to perform night in and night out.
Behind the plate, junior Ashlee Kleinman brings a lot of experience to a tough position Baise said. Freshman Megan Duty will serve as the back-up catcher.
Junior Tasha Collins will anchor one of the corners at first base with freshman Brooke Lucas battling for playing time. At second base will be senior Caymie Collier with freshman Katelyn Leonard providing a solid back-up. At shortstop will be junior Ericka Leighty. Rounding out the infield is senior Emily Mannon at third base, but she may also provide backup to Leighty at short. Sophomore Ashley Smith could also see playing time at third.
Amy Lien, who is a newcomer to the program, will get the starting position in center, while Hurron will help in the outfield when she is not pitching. Leonard and Lucas will battle along with freshman Amber Goodall for the remaining two spots in the outfield. Junior Courtney Koukos and sophomore Tanner Miller will both miss the season with injuries.
"South Point will be considerably young this season with only two seniors on the roster but we will be experienced," Baise said.
Baise gives a lot of credit to his assistant coach Tara Layne for helping build the program.
"Layne led her team to a regional appearance and her experience is priceless," Baise said.

South Point plays Wellston twice this season. The Lady Pointers lost to the Lady Rockets 1-0 in last year's Division III sectional championship game. Mikyla Perkins, Wellston's graduated second baseman, made a leaping grab of a line drive in the last inning that robbed the Lady Pointers of the potential go-ahead run. Good luck to South Point this season.
